NHL Game Night: 10-14-23 Lightning at Red Wings

Lightning’s new defensive system still needs the kinks worked out.

TB-4
DET-6

Jonas Johansson allowed five goals on 41 shots for the loss. I’m not gonna throw this at Jonas’ feet when the guy had to stave off multiple 2-on-0’s. The Lightning puck management and defensive coverage was, at times, abysmal.

Steven Stamkos was the game’s second star.

Getting outshot 41-25 kind of discourages me from pointing out the silver linings in this one. Did Detroit get a lot of puck luck? Yes. You get more puck luck when you generate more possession and that’s what happened tonight. The Lightning have to get better managing the puck and they have to get better with their zone coverage. Game two of 82. We move on.

Waltteri Merala was -1 with 2 hits in 12:01.
