NHL Game Night: 12-21-22 Lightning at Red Wings

Lightning blunder their way into holiday break.

TB-4
DET-7

Brian Elliott allowed five goals on 29 shots for the loss. He was bad tonight. I count two goals where he was grossly off positionally and there was of course one puckhandling gaffe that also led to a goal against. I don’t want to bag on the guy because he’s done his job pretty well to this point of the season, but tonight was the opposite of good.

First Period
1:29 TB Point (17), (Kucherov, Cernak)
15:34 DET Maata (3), (Suter)
18:38 TB Killorn (9), (Colton, Perbix)
19:32 DET Rasmussen (5), (Chiarot, Sundqvist)

Second Period
11:08 DET Larkin (11), (Perron, Rasmussen)
13:15 TB Colton (8), (unassisted)

Third Period
3:48 DET Soderblom (4), (Veleno)
9:46 DET Larkin (12), (unassisted)
16:13 TB Kucherov (13), (Hedman, Stamkos)
17:27 DET Perron (11), (Larkin)(EN)
18:59 DET Rasmussen (6), (Perron)(EN)

Nikita Kucherov was the game’s third star.

The annoying thing is this was a winnable game because Detroit didn’t cloak themselves in glory either between the Erne turnover that resulted in Colton’s goal and the Husso softie on Kucherov’s goal. But, when you gift a team three soft goals you’re probably not coming back from that. And, that’s to say nothing about crossing Espo’s Rule by failing to score on an extended 5-on-3 as well as giving up a goal with under a minute to play in the First Period. They broke a lot of rules you ought not break in hockey and ultimately paid the price.

Be glad the Lightning potted some insurance points before the start of this ten game segment.

Nick Perbix had a helper and was -1 with 2 hits in 16:25.
