Crunch thump Pens to claw back to .500.
SYR-5
WBS-2
Christopher Gibson, down from the Lightning practice squad, stopped 39 of 41 for the victory in yet another game where the Crunch won, but the shot totals were lopsidedly in favor of the Penguins.
First Period
9:06 SYR Fortier (4), (Barre-Boulet)
14:38 SYR Day (1), (Noel)
Second Period
3:30 SYR Katchouk (2), (Somppi, Green)
4:41 SYR Day (2), (Somppi, Wilson)
6:20 WBS Schaller (4), (Schilkey)
Third Period
12:56 O’Conner (2), (Joseph, Schaller)(PP)
19:00 SYR Keeper (2), (unassisted)(EN)
Sean Day and Otto Somppi were the game’s first and second stars.
Somppi, quietly, is leading the Crunch in scoring and may be the biggest mover in terms of increasing his stock over the early portion of this AHL season. He has 4 goals and 8 points through 11 games. Alex Green posted his first AHL point on a helper on Boris Katchouk’s Second Period tally.
After a rough start to the campaign, the Crunch are now 5-5-1. They still sit in second to last in the North Division, but they’re just two points behind three of the teams in front of them in the standings. With Alex Barre-Boulet and Grigori Denisenko being returned to the club, maybe there’s hope the team can go on a run.
