Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick ahead of schedule in recovery from December knee injury

It wasn’t the way he envisioned spending his winter months, but Dana Tyrell is making the best of a bad situation and is hoping to hit the ice this summer stronger than ever.

After completely tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and partially tearing the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a Dec. 18 World Junior exhibition game against Sweden, Tyrell has taken to the arduous task of rehabbing the knee with his trademark hard working approach.

The soon-to-be 20-year-old has been working on the knee with a Hockey Canada physiotherapist at Canada Olympic Park, along with his trainer of over two years, Doug Crashley.

“My (physiotherapist) says it’s ahead of schedule so things are moving along quickly,” Tyrell said after a recent morning workout session at COP. “It’s a six month recovery, but I’ve seen guys I’ve been training with in here that are at a five month point and I’m ahead of them already.”

Szczechura off IR; Reassigned to Norfolk

The Tampa Bay Lightning have assigned center Paul Szczechura to the Norfolk Admirals, it was announced today by Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton. He has been sidelined with a lower body injury since January 13.

Szczechura, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound center, had appeared in all 23 games for Norfolk prior to his first NHL call-up on December 1. He was leading the team with 11 goals, 13 assists and 24 points at the time. He also was tied for ninth in the AHL in scoring and tied for tenth in the league in goals at the time.

Szczechura made his NHL debut on December 2 with the Lightning in Philadelphia. Since then, he has played 18 games with Tampa Bay, scoring two goals and two assists with six penalty minutes. Szczechura, 23, signed a two-year deal as a free agent with the Lightning on April 24.

Tyrell's Tournament, Season, Junior Career Over

In the blink of an eye, Lightning prospect Dana Tyrell went from being on top of the junior hockey world - finally making Team Canada's WJC squad, being put on a line with expected leader John Tavares, leveling super-prospect Victor Hedman with a vicious check - to looking at knee surgery and months of rehab.

Several Canadian news outlets, including the Sun media, are reporting Tyrell is done for not only the tournament, but the year after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament and a partially tearing his medial collateral ligament. The center/winger will need surgery and was scheduled to return to his hometown of Airdrie, Alta., last night (Sunday).

Prince George Citizen: Tyrell's Knee Injury "Significant"

The Prince George Citizen is reporting, as learned from sources, that the lower body injury Lightning prospect and Canada winger Dana Tyrell suffered last night is a "significant knee injury."

The newspaper said Tyrell is definitely out of Canada's second exhibition game scheduled for Sunday.

Sources have told The Citizen Tyrell has a knee injury and his participation in the tournament is in serious question -- national junior team officials have not confirmed the reports. Team Canada's first WJC game is Boxing Day against the Czech Republic.

A year ago, Tyrell suffered a knee strain that kept him from being at his best for the national junior team's final selection camp, and he was released, reported The Citizen.
