Springfield Notes: Boutin Back, Spina Moved to Center

According to today's Springfield Republican:

Jonathan Boutin has returned from injury (which was a concussion) and the team will carry three goaltenders into the weekend: Boutin, Karri Ramo, and Gerald Coleman. The paper says that a roster move could be made on Monday. Of interest here is Tampa Bay GM Jay Feaster telling the Tampa papers today that he doesn't want to deal off a player from the NHL roster, but instead - if a deal is to be made - he would use a prospect/pick. Tampa currently has three AHL-caliber goaltenders. Hmmmm…..

Also, Falcons Coach Steve Stirling plans to permanently move David Spina to center. Stirling likes the way Spina and Kyle Wanvig work with each other and the physical presence of Brandon Elliott on that line. The Republican points out Spina assisted on all three of Wanvig’s goals against Hartford the other night.

Probable top-3 lines entering the weekend:

Eric Healey – Daniel Corso – Norm Milley
Kyle Wanvig – David Spina – Brandon Elliott
Marek Kvapil – Dan Cavanaugh – Justin Keller

AHL Game Night 2/11: Falcons at Monarchs

That's an unfortunate outcome to a very good effort.

MAN-3

Gerald Coleman stopped 22 of 25 shots faced for his first AHL loss of the season. Springfield got goals from Marek Kvapil and Norm Milley with individual assists belonging to Doug Andress and Andy Rogers. In a dramatic departure from many recent efforts by the Falcons, Springfield dominated the shot count in outshooting Manchester 39-25.

AHL Game Night 2/10: Wolf Pack at Falcons

Holy crap! Can we make the next home game "Jean Trudel Night?"

HFD-2
SPR-5

Gerald Coleman turned in a sparkling 36 saves on 38 shots faced effort but the story of the night was the goal scoring explosion by new Falcon Kyle Wanvig who scored a hat trick to go along with a 1st period throw down in what has to qualify as the most dominating effort by a Falcons forward this season. David Spina assisted on all 3 Wanvig goals and Daniel Corso netted Springfield's other 2 goals. Matt Smaby and Norm Milley each had a pair of assists and freshly recalled Brandon Elliot chipped in an individual helper before being tossed out for being the third man in during Wanvig's first period brawl. The point was the first of Elliot's AHL career and it came on the night where the Springfield organization retired the jersey of former Falcon Rob Murray. Wanvig, Spina and Coleman were the game's three stars.

On a sour note, the Falcons were outshot 38-18 in the contest. Still, this was the first night in roughly a couple of months where Springfield got scoring balance from their first and second lines, which undoubtedly was part of the thought behind the decision to pull the trigger behind the Andy Delmore trade. Unfortunately, with Springfield now 9 points out of a playoff spot the shot in the arm likely comes about 3-4 weeks too late.

AHL Game Day 2/4: Falcons at Senators

It's a shame the Falcons couldn't quite get that second point to salvage more out of this weekend.

BNG-3 (SO)

Karri Ramo stopped 43 of 45 shots faced in the loss. Sylvain Dufresne had two assists in the game with Springfield's goals coming from Marek Kvapil and Eric Healey. Adam Henrich and Norm Milley added individual assists. Justin Keller failed to capitalize on a 2nd period penalty shot opportunity and former Falcon Ryan Vesce scored twice in the shootout for Binghampton who emerged triumphant 2-1 in the penalty shots in six frames. Ramo and Healey were named first and third stars respectively.

AHL Game Night 1/26: Devils at Falcons

It makes me sick to my stomach to see the Falcons blow a 3-0 lead.

LOW-5
SPR-3

Karri Ramo allowed 4 goals on 27 shots in the loss and his season record (13-14-0) now falls under .500 for the first time since October. Norm Milley led the Falcons with 1 goal and 1 assist while Daniel Corso had 2 assists. Eric Healey and Andre Deveaux had the other Falcons goals and Doug O'Brien, Adam Henrich and Andy Delmore had individual helpers. Milley was named third star of the game.

Instead of leapfrogging Portland into 5th in the division and keeping pace 4 points back of the final Atlantic Division playoff spot, the Falcons have dropped 6 points out of the playoffs and just 1 point out of the Atlantic Division basement. Tonight's game was the first of a five game spot in the schedule where Springfield looked to have some winnable games, but the third period collapse against Lowell seems an ominous sign.

AHL Game Night 1/24: Falcons at Monarchs

Unfortunately, this Falcons team just doesn't have a second line to speak of, and it's very difficult for them to come from 2 goals down as a result.

MAN-4

Karri Ramo stopped 28 of 31 shots faced in the loss. Springfield got 1 goal and 1 assist from Daniel Corso and a pair of helpers from Eric Healey. Springfield outshot Worcester 30-24 in the game.

WOR-4
SPR-2

Karri Ramo allowed 4 goals on 28 shots before leaving the game for Jonathan Boutin with a little over 10 minutes left in the game. Boutin stopped 2 of 2 shots faced. Daniel Corso had 1 goal and 1 assist and was named second star of the game. Sylvain Dufresne had the other Falcons goal while David Spina and Andy Rogers had individual assists.

The Falcons have now lost four in a row and six of their last seven games. With Norm Milley and Justin Keller out of the lineup they've been reduced to a one line team and other than David Spina none of the supporting cast has really stepped up to fill the void. Blair Jones? Zero shots on goal. Marek Kvapil? -3. Something's got to give.
