AHL Game Day 3/25: Monarchs at Falcons

Tonight was a make-up for a game that was snowed in a week or two ago.

MAN-4
SPR-3

Jonathan Boutin allowed 2 goals on 5 shots before being pulled for Kevin Beech who allowed 2 goals on 23 shots the rest of the way to take the loss in his first AHL game. Daniel Corso had 2 assists in the game with the Falcons' goals coming from Kyle Wanvig, Norm Milley and Justin Keller. David Spina, Eric Healey and Nick Kuiper added individual helpers. Wanvig was named third star of the game.

AHL Game Night 2/23: Falcons at Phantoms

Darren Reid's revenge.

SPR-4
PHI-6

Jonathan Boutin allowed 6 goals on 34 shots in the game. Springfield got 2 goals and 1 assist from David Spina to go with 1 goal and 2 assists from Kyle Wanvig and a trifecta of helpers from Eric Healey. Stephen Baby had the other Falcons goal and rookie Andy Rogers added an assist as did Boutin. Healey was tapped for third star of the game honors.

Former Lightning prospect/Falcon Darren Reid had 1 goal and 2 assists in the game. Since leaving Springfield, Reid has 16 goals and 27 points in 38 games with the Phantoms and has received a couple of cups of coffee with the Flyers. I think it's fair to say the change of scenery worked for him.

As an aside, I hope the Lightning organization manages to wrap up David Spina's services for Norfolk next season. It's unlikely they'll retain Healey and Cavanaugh, in my opinion, and Milley and Corso may not be holdovers either. Spina, however, is a player the Lightning should try to retain in their minor league organization after spending two years developing him.

AHL Game Night 3/21: Falcons at Bears

And the season continues to grind down to the bitter end.

SPR-2
HER-4

Jonathan Boutin allowed 4 goals on 35 shots in the loss. Justin Keller and Kyle Wanvig had the Falcons' goals with assists to Adam Henrich, Norm Milley and Eric Healey.

Interesting note for those looking for silver linings: Keller's goal totals pro-rate to about 20 goals for a full season had he not missed so much time with the injury he had in December. That's not a bad rookie campaign, especially for a player who is so undersized. That's something to build on, which is critical. Aside from Chris Lawrence, there's not much scoring help coming through the pipeline with the possible exception of the X factor that is the Kazionovs. So, whatever solutions to the minor league offensive woes there can be for next season have to come from within and have to come from the young forwards already under contract stepping up.

AHL Game Night 3/17: Wolf Pack at Falcons

With the weight of the affiliation dissolving seemingly lifted off their shoulders, Springfield responds.

HFD-2
SPR-5

Jonathan Boutin stopped 29 of 31 shots faced for the win. Veteran Eric Healey led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist while new Falcon Joe Rullier had a trifecta of assists. David Spina added 2 goals and the Falcons' other newcomer, Nick Kuiper, had two helpers. Stephen Baby had the other Falcons goal and Justin Keller, Dan Cavanaugh and Norm Milley had individual assists. ATO player Dusty Collins was -1 with 2 shots on goal in his professional debut.

Kyle Wanvig and Ryan Munce were not available for the game due to travel problems presumably because of the snowstorm that has enveloped the Northeast. Karri Ramo was not listed as a healthy scratch in Springfield's game recap, for those who need fuel for the speculation he has been recalled.

PRO-2
SPR-3

Karri Ramo stopped 38 of 40 shots faced for the win. Norm Milley led the way offensively with a pair of goals, including a shorthanded talley. Veteran Eric Healey had the game winning goal and added an assist. Individual helpers belonged to Radek Smolenak and PJ Atherton. In 4 games since his recall, Atherton has 2 goals, 3 points and, just as importantly, a solid even rating.

Brady Greco suited up but did not play in the game for Springfield. Milley, Ramo and Healey were named the game's three stars. Ramo and the Falcons ended a Providence winning streak which had reached six games.

Karri Ramo allowed 4 goals on 34 shots in the loss. Daniel Corso and PJ Atherton had the Falcons goals. Individual assists belonged to Matt Smaby, Norm Milley, Dan Cavanaugh and Justin Keller. Tonight's game turned on a 5 minute high sticking penalty in the second period on Marek Kvapil which Portland cashed in on twice to assume a lead they never relenquished the rest of the way.

AHL Game Night 2/28: Falcons at Sharks

Just plain awful.

SPR-2
WOR-6

Karri Ramo allowed 6 goals on 43 shots before giving way to Jonathan Boutin who stopped 2 of 2 shots the rest of the way. Norm Milley and Daniel Corso each had 1 goal and 1 assist for the Falcons while Eric Healey added an individual helper, but with Nick Kuiper and Joe Rullier not in the lineup the Falcons were little match for the Sharks' onslaught tonight getting outshot a staggering 45-27. Milley managed to be named third star of the game, which is little consolation.

The Falcons are now an unlucky 13 games under .500 for the season.

AHL Game Night 2/24: Bruins at Falcons

Total third period implosion.

PRO-6
SPR-2

Karri Ramo allowed 4 goals on 19 shots before giving way to Jonathan Boutin who fared even worse allowing 2 goals on 5 shots. Justin Keller and Norm Milley had Springfield's goals with assists belonging to Marek Kvapil, Jay Rosehill and Daniel Corso. Unfortunately, after hanging around for the first 40 minutes of the game, Springfield self destructed and allowed 4 goals in the final frame. The Falcons also had an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead early in the game on a David Spina penalty shot, but Spina failed to score and a Bruins goal in the final minutes of the first evened the game up.

Positives: with Kyle Wanvig up in Tampa on recall, Kvapil was moved back up to the second line with Keller and Spina and the three responded. Kvapil had the assist and 2 shots on goal, Spina had 4 shots and Keller had a team high 5 shots on goal. Hopefully the youngsters can keep it up. Remember, a couple of years ago Paul Ranger and Evgeny Artyukhin really came on at the end of the year (especially Ranger in the last dozen games) and it catapulted them into the NHL early the next year. Even though Springfield's playoff chances are slim and none, these young players still have a lot of developmental time left to capitalize on and once the college and junior team seasons start to end there will be an opportunity for the Lightning to identify some players to sign to ATO contracts with a view toward shaping next year's roster. There's still a lot to play for here.

Karri Ramo stopped 19 of 22 shots faced in the loss. David Spina and Daniel Corso had the Falcons' goals. Individual assists belonged to Sylvain Dufresne, Doug O'Brien and Norm Milley. Corso was named the game's second star.

Karri Ramo has not posted a win in his last nine starts. The Falcons have scored a league low 135 goals this season in 58 games (2.33 goals per game).
