Despite a ferocious third period comeback bid the Lightning's Traverse City prospect team fell 8-6 tonight against Columbus. 2005 draftee Kevin Beech stopped just 33 of 41 shots faced. Even in defeat, however, the Lightning organization has to be pleased with the emergence of their offense so far. The Lightning prospects have scored 11 goals in the first two contests. Leading the way have been Justin Keller of Kelowna and Springfield Falcon Adam Henrich with 3 goals each. 2005 draftee Marek Kvapil has also acquitted himself well offensively notching the Lightning's first goals in both games so far. And, it seems, in every prospect tournament there is a player who emerges from nowhere to make a serious impression. Thus far, with 2 goals and 1 assist in the opening two contests, it has been Moose Jaw's Blair Jones. After the game Lightning Head Scout Jake Goertzen said Jones has played well so far in the tournament. "He has stuck his nose in and played hard and made some good plays," Goertzen added. The Lightning prospects will face off with the Minnesota Wild's prospects tomorrow night at 7pm.

The Springfield Falcons in conjunction with the Tampa Bay Lightning have announced the signing of center Ryan Vesce. The diminuitive Vesce, at just 5'8" 170 lbs., spent last season with Rogle BK of the Swedish Alsvenskan where he led his club with 20 goals and 45 points in 43 games. Prior to that, the 23 year old played four years in the ECAC for Cornell where he compiled 128 points in 131 games. His career year came as a junior when he led Cornell in scoring with 19 goals and 45 points in 36 games. With outstanding speed and skill, the native of Lloyd Harbor, NY draws obvious comparisons to former ECAC alum's Martin St. Louis and Eric Perrin. An added bonus may be Vesce's faceoff ability. Vesce won 55% of his draws last season in the initial phase of the Alsvenskan schedule in the Sodra division, 65% in the Superalsvenskan and 57% in the promotion tournament, the Playoff till Kvalserien.
