I'm extremely happy for Fredrik Modin. He's been one of the classiest players in the Lightning's history since joining the team 6-7 years ago. Now he's won a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal in the span of about a year and a half. I can think of few players who deserve it more.
Back to work Tuesday.
There were no Lightning prospects in action in the QMJHL today.
Chris Lawrence assisted on Mississauga's only goal as they were defeated by Peterborough 5-1.
Marek Bartanus, likely injured, was scratched for his fourth straight game as Kitchener beat Owen Sound 4-2. Bolt Prospects is still looking into Bartanus' status.
Radek Smolenak scored his 35th goal of the season as Kingston toppled Barrie 4-3. Smolenak's 35 goals and 72 points through 56 games has already eclipsed his rookie total of 32 goals and 60 points he had in 67 games last season. His plus/minus has also improved by 26 points this year even though the Frontenacs lost Florida Panthers first round pick Anthony Stewart to the pros this season.
Justin Keller scored his 100th WHL goal (44th of the year) in the second period of the Rockets game in Kennewick, Washington vs. Tri-Cities. Keller banged in a rebound for his fifth goal in his last three games. In the third period, Keller finished off a tic-tac-toe play on the power play for his 45th goal of the year. Kelowna won 4-3. He moves back into 4th in the WHL in scoring with the night's effort and is now just 1 goal back of Moose Jaw's Troy Brouwer for the league lead in goals.
Vladimir Mihalik assisted on Red Deer's only goal in a 5-1 loss to Medicine Hat. The point was Vladimir's 11th of the season.
Mike Betz wins his first game as a Chief in the shootout.
Betz made 27 saves on 31 shots faced before winning in the penalty shots. Brett Peterson and Jean Desrochers each had a goal and an assist in the game. Betz defeated goaltender David Currie who, you'll remember, started the season in Johnstown before being dealt to the Victoria Salmon Kings after Morgan Cey returned from his early season groin injury.

While Russia prepared to battle the Czech Republic at the Olympics today for the bronze medal, in the Superleague it was back to business for two teams. Khimik MO defeated Lada Togliatti 2-0 today. Goaltender Vasily Koshechkin's record drops to 16-12-6 with the loss.
