Beech Sees Limited Action in First Game with Otters

CHL Update: 1/12

Two days after being traded from a playoff contender to the OHL's worst team, Kevin Beech did not get the start for Erie in the Otters 7-1 loss to Sarnia last night. Beech did see action, however, as he replaced starter Jonathan Laniel down 5-0 to begin the third period. Beech stopped 10 of 12 third period shots as Laniel took the loss.

Beech's old team, the Sudbury Wolves, lost their first game without Beech, 4-2 to the Chris Lawrence-led Mississauga Ice Dogs Wednesday night. Sebastian Dahm, whom the Wolves acquired from Sarnia to take Beech's place, stopped 32 of 36 shots in the loss. Lawrence was held scoreless and was minus-1.

Marek Bartanus and the Owen Sound Attack were defeated by Peterborough 4-3 despite Owen Sound outshooting the Petes 56-31. Bartanus was scoreless and even for the Attack in the game Thursday - his first since returning from World Juniors.

On Wednesday, Vladimir Mihalik did not play as Prince George fell to Portland 3-2.

Chris Lawrence scored his 24th goal of the year and added two assists to help Mississauga to a 4-2 home win over Oshawa this afternoon. He was also plus-1. The 6-4 winger opened the game with a power play goal before adding a power play assist with 5 minutes left in the second period. He then set up fellow winger Jadran Beljo with 6 seconds left in the middle period to give the Ice Dogs a 4-1 lead.

Marek Bartanus has yet to join Owen Sound following the conclusion of the WJCs in Sweden. The Attack fell at home to Kingston tonight 4-3.

Kevin Beech had a good showing for the second night in a row - but Beech and Sudbury lost in a shootout for the second night in a row. Beech stopped 30 of 31 shots in regulation and overtime before stopping 1 of 2 attempts in the shootout. The Wolves went 0 for 3 in the shootout and Sault Ste. Marie took the win, 2-1. Sudbury's Patrik Lusnak had scored with 2 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Beech was named the game's second star for his efforts.

In the WHL, Dane Crowley and Swift Current fell 6-2 on the road in Regina, one night after crushing the Pats 9-0 in Swift Current. Crowley, who had a goal last night, was scoreless tonight with a minus-1 rating and had an early first period fighting major vs. Mike Reich. Reich earned a 10-minute misconduct in addition to a fighting major.

WJC Game Day 1/5: Slovakia vs. Belarus

Slovakia finished their 2007 World Junior Championships experience with a win - their first and only win of the tournament - when they crushed Belarus today 9-0 in the final game of the relegation round. Slovakia finished 0-4 in round robin play and had lost to Switzerland earlier this week in their first relegation round game.

Lightning prospect Marek Bartanus scored a power play goal in the game and both Bartanus and Vladimir Mihalik registered minor penalties.

Bartanus, a winger, finished the round robin and relegation rounds tied for third in team scoring with a goal and two assists. He also had a minus-one rating, eight penalty minutes, and 11 shots on goal.

Mihalik, a defenseman, registered one goal, six shots, four penalty minutes, and tied for the team lead with a plus-one rating.

Slovakia Drops to 0-5 at WJCs

A miserable tournament got even worse for Team Slovakia today. After finishing the round robin portion of the U20 World Junior Championships 0-4, Slovakia fell to Switzerland 2-1 today in their first match of the relegation round. Lightning prospect Marek Bartanus had a secondary assist on the lone Slovakian goal and had 2 penalty minutes and 3 shots on goal. Defenseman Vladimir Mihalik was scoreless in the game.

Slovakia Finishes WJC Round Robin 0-4

Slovakia fell to 0-4 in the tournament and now moves into the relegation round. Vladimir Mihalik was even with 2 shots on goal and 2 penalty minutes in the game. Marek Bartanus was even with a team leading 5 shots on goal and 2 penalty minutes.

USA Crushes Slovakia at WJCs

Team USA effectively stomped the life out of Slovakia's WJC hopes today defeating them 6-1 today in round robin play in Sweden. Vladimir Mihalik was -1 with 1 shot on goal in the game. Marek Bartanus was -2 with 2 penalty minutes in the game. The road gets worse for Slovakia as tomorrow they square off with defending tournament champion Canada in their final game of the round robin.

Slovakia allowed three unanswered third period goals today falling to Sweden 6-3. Lightning prospect Vladimir Mihalik had 1 goal in the game and was +1 with 1 shot on goal. The Americans were mentioned among the pre-tournament favorites but have also fallen to 0-2 early in the tournament and will be just as desperate as the Slovaks to get a victory to try and salvage their medal round hopes.

Slovakia Loses WJC Opener

Germany continued their great start to the U20 WJC's today knocking off Slovakia 4-2 after defeating Team USA less than 24 hours prior. Bartanus has assumed a regular spot on Slovakia's second line thus far. Bartanus was even with 3 shots on goal in the game. 2005 first round pick Vladimir Mihalik was -1 with 1 shot on goal in the game.
