AHL Preseason Game Day 9/30: Admirals at Phantoms

The Admirals got some great goaltending from Karri Ramo and Ryan Munce and it made all the difference.

PHI-2 (SO)

Ramo stopped 10 of 11 shots he faced before giving way to Munce who stopped 28 of 29 and went on for the shootout victory.

Tryout player Ron Klinkhammer led the way with 1 goal and 1 assist. Jay Rosehill had the other Norfolk goal. Blair Jones, Marek Kvapil, and Shawn Collymore added helpers.

Justin Keller and Radek Smolenak scored for Norfolk in the shootout.

News From the First Day of Admirals Camp Scrimmages

This just in... according to the Virginian-Pilot's Paul White, Lightning style training camps are grueling. Who knew?

Also, Head Coach Steve Stirling praises Justin Keller, Chris Lawrence, Brandon Elliot, Jay Rosehill, Jonathan Boutin, and Dana Tyrell. Also, Marek Kvapil scored two goals on the first day of scrimmages.

A Ramothodist Preacher's Sunday Sermon

Lightning fans who know me know that when it comes to this team's prospects I've been a big booster of the concept of Karri Ramo making it to the NHL sooner rather than later. However, for Ramo to make the team out of camp would be an improbable event because the business side of the game all but precludes it. The Lightning have invested roughly $4 million dollars in the tandem of Johan Holmqvist and Marc Denis heading into the 2007-2008 season, and the team learned this summer that Denis is virtually untradable at this point in time after such a poor campaign last season. I won't even attempt to argue for Ramo's promotion to the bigs from a business standpoint, because it doesn't make sense.

But from a hockey standpoint it makes all the sense in the world, and it makes sense on two levels...

AHL Game Night 4/14: Bruins at Falcons

The Lightning's affiliation with Springfield ends with a whimper.

Jonathan Boutin allowed 2 goals on 34 shots in the loss. The Falcons finish the 2006-2007 season by being shutout in their final two contests. Appropo. Boutin was named third star of the game for his efforts.

It's a good thing this season is about over. Otherwise, I think mild mannered Steve Stirling might be prone to choke some of these players.

Jonathan Boutin allowed 5 goals on 26 shots before being pulled for Kevin Beech who allowed 2 goals on 9 shots the rest of the way. Manchester scored a remarkable 6 power play goals in the game going 6 for 12 on the man advantage.

I'll say it again: the Lightning need to make sure to take David Spina with them to Norfolk.

Jonathan Boutin allowed 3 goals on 14 shots before being pulled for Kevin Beech who allowed 3 on 33 shots to take the backdoor loss. David Spina and Norm Milley each had 2 goals in the game. Veterans Kyle Wanvig, Daniel Corso and Eric Healey each had 2 assists. Jacob Micflikier and Nick Kuiper added individual helpers.

Spina now has 15 goals and 35 points in 71 games this season. Over the last 11 games Spina has 7 goals and 13 points including 4 multi-point games. This comes at a time when Steve Stirling has chastized some of his players for simply going through the motions down the stretch of an otherwise lost season. Spina has now spent over 1-1/2 years playing in the Lightning's system in Springfield after being signed as an ATO midway through last season. His speed and his character have made him the rare success story among minor league players adjusting to the Lightning's style of play. Tampa has invested too much time in developing Spina not to take him to Norfolk.

Bolt Prospects Prospect of the Week: 4/2-4/8

With all due respect once again to Ryan Munce, who single handedly willed Johnstown into the playoffs this week with a 49 save performance in the season finale at Reading...

The Lightning organization's quietest success story of the season scores his third Bolt Prospects award of the season.

AHL Game Night 4/7: Falcons at Wolf Pack

ATO's shine in Hartford.

HFD-3 (SO)

Jonathan Boutin stops 46 of 49 in regulation and OT before stopping 3 of 6 in the shootout for the win. ATO signee Justin Fletcher led the way offensively with a pair of power play goals while fellow ATO signee Jacob Micflikier scored a power play goal of his own and also scored in the shootout. Sylvain Dufresne, Joe Rullier, Kyle Wanvig, Daniel Corso, David Spina and Eric Healey added assists. Spina, Micflikier, Stephen Baby, and Wanvig scored for the Falcons in the shootout. Fletcher and Boutin were named second and third stars of the game respectively.

Boutin sets a new personal best for his young career with his 9th win of the season and, for the moment, gets his save percentage back up to .900. Falcons now riding a rare two game winning streak during this horrendous second half collapse.
