Koshechkin Improves to 3-0 at World Championships

Koshechkin and the Russians defeated Switzerland today 6-3 today in their qualifying round matchup. Koshechkin stopped 13 shots in the game and also recorded an assist on a first period Ilya Kovalchuk goal. Koshechkin, Russia Hold on to Beat Finland

At the end of two periods in Moscow today at the 2007 World Championships, Russia and Lightning goaltending prospect Vasily Koshechkin had a comfortable 4-1 lead on Finland and seemed to be cruising to a 3-0 record.

Without being able to watch the game, it's unclear whether Russia stopped playing or Finland turned it on - or a little of both - but Russia had to get a late insurance goal that ended up being the game winner to beat Finland 5-4.

Koshechkin had stopped 12 of 13 shots through two periods before being peppered in the third to end up being 21 for 25 in the save department. Taking the loss for Finland was Lightning draft pick and Columbus Blue Jacket Fredrik Norrena.

Word on the Street: Koshechkin

Word on the street is that despite the fact Vasily Koshechkin is under contract to Lada Togliatti through the 2007-2008 season, Togliatti may not be able to afford Vasily and he may be on his way to Tampa as a result. Recall, Togliatti traded half their team two seasons ago including Dimitri Kazionov during the December Euro Tour break because one of their main partners in ownership pulled out of the club. Apparently those financial problems haven't disappeared which is why Koshechkin coming to North America may be on the table a year earlier than was thought going into this season.

Koshechkin Shuts the Door on Denmark

Lightning prospect Vasily Koshechkin got the start for tournament-host Russia yesterday against Denmark in Russia's first game of the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Koshechkin stopped 24 of 25 shots for the win, a rather easy 9-1 decision. Among the scorers for Russia were NHL stars Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, and Alexander Frolov. Russia leads Group D at 1-0. Alexander Eremenko, who plays for Ak Bars Kazan in the RSL, served as Koshechkin's backup.

Russia Loses Euro Tour Finals

Thursday marked the beginning of the European Hockey Tour Finals between Russia and Sweden. Team Russia featured goaltender Vasily Koshechkin, left wing Anton But and right wing Evgeny Artyukhin.

In Game One, on Thursday, Russia lost to Sweden 3-2 with Koshechkin allowing 3 goals on 29 shots faced. Anton But was scoreless with 2 penalty minutes in the match. He played on the 4th line for Russia while fellow Lightning property Evgeny Artyukhin played on the team's second line.

In Game Two, today, Russia once again fell by the slimmest of margins. The Swedes defeated Russia 4-2 with a late empty net goal padding their margin. Koshechkin made 20 saves on 23 shots faced. But was moved to the third line in the match while Artyukhin was moved to the team's 4th line. The European Hockey Tour Finals was, in some ways, a warm up for the upcoming World Championships.
