You explain it to me. Just a couple of days after completing a masterful three game performance against some of the best club talent in Europe at the Karjala Cup, Vasily Koshechkin allowed 5 goals in a 5-4 overtime loss to Ekaterinburg. 37 year old veteran Andrei Subbotin had 2 goals and 3 points, including the overtime winning goal, for Ekaterinburg.

Evidently, the majority of the KHL forgot how to play defense over the Karjala break. Dmitri Kazionov was scoreless in 14:28 in Kazan's 6-5 shootout win over SKA St. Petersburg. Kazionov did score the winning goal in the shootout session for Ak Bars, as well. Ex-Stars second rounder Johan Fransson (Johan Fransson Lite) had 1 goal and 3 points in the loss for SKA. Ex-Lightning prospect Anton But was St. Petersburg's only unsuccessful shooter in the three round shootout.

Vasily Koshechkin, Russia, Win, 26/27, 1.00 GAA, .963 sv%
Tournament totals: 3 GP, 2-0-0, 1 SO, 0.40 GAA, .986 sv%

Vasily Koshechkin finally allowed a goal in the Karjala Cup, but former NHL first rounder Alexander Perezhogin and Denis Grebeshkov each had goals to help lead Russia to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic. Koshechkin stopped 70 of the 71 shots he faced in the tournament in reasserting his claim to being the best Russian-born goaltender not in the NHL after a disappointing start of the season for Severstal Cherepovets.

Unfortunately for the Russians, Finland defeated Sweden 4-1 with a goal and an assist from ex-Lightning defenseman Janne Niskala to win the tournament of goal differential. The Russians, who were +2 in the tournament, ended up in second behind the Finns at +7, despite the fact the Russians defeated the Finns head-to-head, because the Swedes also finished 2-1-0 in the tournament, with a -1 differential.
