CHL Game Night: 10/22

QMJHL

Note: Lightning prospect defenseman Mark Barberio has been named to Team QMJHL for the 2009 Subway Super Series vs. Team Russia. This will be Barberio's first appearance in the annual all-star event. The QMJHL portion of the series begins November 16. Russia will then play Team OHL and Team WHL. Rosters for the latter two have yet to be announced.

OHL

Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds 3 @ Niagara Ice Dogs 4
RW Kyle DeCoste, SSM: 0-0-0, +1, 4 PIM (hooking, elbowing)
Season totals: 9 GP, 1-0-1, -1, 20 PIM

CHL Game Night: 10/21

QMJHL

Moncton Wildcats 4 @ Montreal Junior 2
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 0-1-1,+1, 4 PIM, 1 SOG
Season totals: 14 GP, 1-10-11, +1, 18 PIM

Barberio set up the tie-breaking goal while on the power play in the second period. The Wildcats scored an insurance goal late in the second and held on for the win. Barberio has points in five of his last six games. Barberio is tied for 10th in the league among defenseman in scoring. Moncton’s three-headed defensive monster of Barberio, David Savard (Blue Jackets) and Brandon Gormley (2010) all have 11 points or more.

WHL

Portland Winterhawks 4 @ Lethbridge Hurricanes 3 (OT)
RW Carter Ashton, LET: 0-1-1, E, 2 PIM (boarding)
Season totals: 13 GP, 7-4-11, -5, 20 PIM

Lethbridge has dropped four in a row, this one to perennial basement dweller turned powerhouse Portland. The Winterhawks lead the Western Conference (you read that right) with 20 points. They’re tied with Calgary for the WHL lead in points after finishing last in their conference the last three seasons. Ashton assisted on the tying goal for the Hurricanes, but they fell in overtime.

CHL Game Night: 10/17

QMJHL

Moncton Wildcats 2 @ St. John Sea Dogs 3 (OT)
D Mark Barberio, MCT: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM, 2 SOG
Season totals: 13 GP, 1-9-10, E, 14 PIM

Barberio’s four game points streak came to an end in a loss to provincial rival St. John.

OHL

G Michael Zador, OSH: Win, 24 saves on 26 shots, *Third Star*
Season: 8 GP, 6-1-1-0, 2.98 GAA, .903 sv%, 1 SO
RW Kyle DeCoste, SSM: Did not play.
Season totals: 8 GP, 1-0-1, -2, 16 PIM

Zador won his fifth straight start when he went 3 for 3 in the shootout to beat the Soo. He’s now dropped his GAA from near 6 to under 3. The Greyhounds have lost five straight, but at least they earned a point in this one. No official news as to why DeCoste – who has been struggling despite being expected this year to bring offensive leadership - was scratched.

Windsor Spitfires 4 @ Plymouth Whalers 0
C Richard Panik, WSR: 1-0-1, +1, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 11 GP, 4-2-6, +8, 2 PIM

Panik’s short three game scoreless streak came to an end when he scored in the first period. Playing on a line with likely 2010 first overall pick Taylor Hall and Devils third rounder Adam Henrique, it should be just a matter of time for Panik to explode offensively.

Ottawa 67’s 3 @ Saginaw Spirit 2
LW Matais Sointu, OTT: Did not play.
Season totals: 11 GP, 3-3-6, +3, 4 PIM

Ottawa broke their seven game winless streak, but Sointu remains out of the lineup.

Sarnia’s Jordan Hill (undrafted) broke a 2-2 tie with a power play goal midway through the third period.

Ottawa 67’s 5 @ Windsor Spitfires 8
LW Matais Sointu, OTT: 0-0-0, -2, 0 PIM
Season totals: 11 GP, 3-3-6, +3, 4 PIM
C Richard Panik, WSR: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
Season Totals: 10 GP, 3-2-5, +7, 2 PIM

Thirteen goals, yet our two Lightning prospects failed to register a point. This was the third straight scoreless game for Panik, who’s in a bit of a slump.
