AHL Game Night 2/23: Falcons at Phantoms

Darren Reid's revenge.

SPR-4
PHI-6

Jonathan Boutin allowed 6 goals on 34 shots in the game. Springfield got 2 goals and 1 assist from David Spina to go with 1 goal and 2 assists from Kyle Wanvig and a trifecta of helpers from Eric Healey. Stephen Baby had the other Falcons goal and rookie Andy Rogers added an assist as did Boutin. Healey was tapped for third star of the game honors.

Former Lightning prospect/Falcon Darren Reid had 1 goal and 2 assists in the game. Since leaving Springfield, Reid has 16 goals and 27 points in 38 games with the Phantoms and has received a couple of cups of coffee with the Flyers. I think it's fair to say the change of scenery worked for him.

As an aside, I hope the Lightning organization manages to wrap up David Spina's services for Norfolk next season. It's unlikely they'll retain Healey and Cavanaugh, in my opinion, and Milley and Corso may not be holdovers either. Spina, however, is a player the Lightning should try to retain in their minor league organization after spending two years developing him.

AHL Game Night 3/21: Falcons at Bears

And the season continues to grind down to the bitter end.

SPR-2
HER-4

Jonathan Boutin allowed 4 goals on 35 shots in the loss. Justin Keller and Kyle Wanvig had the Falcons' goals with assists to Adam Henrich, Norm Milley and Eric Healey.

Interesting note for those looking for silver linings: Keller's goal totals pro-rate to about 20 goals for a full season had he not missed so much time with the injury he had in December. That's not a bad rookie campaign, especially for a player who is so undersized. That's something to build on, which is critical. Aside from Chris Lawrence, there's not much scoring help coming through the pipeline with the possible exception of the X factor that is the Kazionovs. So, whatever solutions to the minor league offensive woes there can be for next season have to come from within and have to come from the young forwards already under contract stepping up.

First Period
HER Werner, (1) (Laing, Arsene), 4:10
SPR Keller, (12) (Henrich, Milley), 8:41 (PP)

Second Period
HER Tenute, (22) (Wilson, Klepis), 6:37
HER Miles, (1) (Hedlund), 11:40

Third Period
SPR Wanvig, (14) (Healey), 3:54
HER Bourque, (20) (Steckel, Laing), 15:46

No Prospect of the Week

I've made the executive decision, in light of the Lightning and Falcons dissolving their affiliation agreement, to not name a Prospect of the Week for 3/12 through 3/18. I would instead like to use this opportunity to salute the Springfield Falcons' fans. Things may not have ended the way the Lightning and the Falcons had hoped, but there's no doubting the class of the Springfield fans and the role that Springfield has played in already putting 4 Lightning prospects full time into the NHL (Ranger, Artyukhin, Craig and Tarnasky).

Atherton, Smolenak Return to Johnstown

According to ECHL.com, the Tampa Bay Lightning have reassigned rookie left wing Radek Smolenak and the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League have reassigned rookie defenseman P.J. Atherton to Johnstown.

Smolenak has 25 points (13g-12a) and 31 penalty minutes in 32 games with Johnstown and one assist and eight penalty minutes in 20 games with Springfield.

Atherton has 26 points (4g-22a) and 46 penalty minutes in 49 games with Johnstown and two points (1g-1a) and two penalty minutes in seven games with Springfield.

Oilers Announce AHL Affliation with Springfield

(Edmonton Oilers Release)

03/19/07-The Edmonton Oilers are pleased to announce they have signed a new three-year affiliation agreement with the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons, enabling the Oilers to ice their own AHL affiliate for the first time since 2004-05.

The new partnership will see the Oilers top prospects playing in Springfield, Massachusetts for the next three seasons, beginning in October 2007.

Ramo Recalled

According to TheAHL.com, the Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled goaltender Karri Ramo from Springfield of the AHL.

In addition, the Falcons have signed Lightning prospect netminder Kevin Beech to an ATO contract.

With the weight of the affiliation dissolving seemingly lifted off their shoulders, Springfield responds.

SPR-5

Jonathan Boutin stopped 29 of 31 shots faced for the win. Veteran Eric Healey led the way with 2 goals and 1 assist while new Falcon Joe Rullier had a trifecta of assists. David Spina added 2 goals and the Falcons' other newcomer, Nick Kuiper, had two helpers. Stephen Baby had the other Falcons goal and Justin Keller, Dan Cavanaugh and Norm Milley had individual assists. ATO player Dusty Collins was -1 with 2 shots on goal in his professional debut.

Kyle Wanvig and Ryan Munce were not available for the game due to travel problems presumably because of the snowstorm that has enveloped the Northeast. Karri Ramo was not listed as a healthy scratch in Springfield's game recap, for those who need fuel for the speculation he has been recalled.

First Period
SPR Healey, (25) (Keller, Milley), 11:04
SPR Healey, (26) (Rullier, Kuiper), 18:33 (SH)

Second Period

Sypek: It's Over

Credit to Bolt Prospects member Mark for bringing this up in comments...

Fran Sypek writes on the Springfield Republican blog that the Springfield Falcons have called a Monday press conference to announce the team is dissolving their affiliation with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization to form a new one with the Edmonton Oilers. Sypek speculates the press conference means the Lightning have finalized a deal with the Norfolk Admirals to be the Lightning's affiliate next season, given that a precondition of the out clause of the recent deal signed between the Lightning and Falcons was that the Lightning needed to have a deal in place with another franchise to nullify the contract.

Falcons sign Dusty Collins to ATO

According to the Springfield Falcons website, Center Dusty Collins has been signed to a standard Amateur Tryout Agreement with the Falcons. Collins just finished his senior season at Northern Michigan. In his four years at Northern he scored 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 137 games. He also registered 135 PIM.
