Bio

History:

Junior Career

A Boston, Massachussetts native, Matt Marshall has spent his formative prep school years in hockey playing for the Noble and Greenough School. A slow developer, Marshall was passed over in his draft year in 2005-2006 but rose through the ranks for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft with a season that saw him score 14 goals and 24 points in 27 games with Nobles, despite playing out of position at center, to go with 8 penalty minutes. Marshall was selected in the 8th round, 78th overall, of the 2007 USHL Entry Draft by the Waterloo Black Hawks and he finished the year ranked 63rd among all North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service. The Lightning selected Marshall in the 5th Round, 150th overall of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2007-2008, Marshall broke out offensively, particularly in the second half of the year, and finished his senior year at Nobles with 25 goals and 26 assists for 51 points in 29 games.

He is committed to play his college hockey for Vermont of the Hockey East conference.

Professional Career

Early indications are that Marshall will play one more year of prep school hockey with Nobles before moving on to Vermont so it could be up to five years before the Lightning see the speedy winger start his pro career.

Scouting Report

Strengths:

The Lightning believe Marshall may have been the best skater in the 2007 draft with blazing top end speed and quick acceleration. Marshall loves the physical game and has a tendency to hit anything that moves on the forecheck. He also is solid in his third of the ice.

Weaknesses:

Marshall's hands are suspect as are his hockey sense, and to this point he has only faced prep school competition. It remains to be seen how he will fare at a higher level of hockey.

Projection:

Marshall's speed and grit make him an ideal candidate to be a checking liner in the future. He is probably 3-5 years away from signing a pro contract and may need time to develop in the AHL after that, but players that skate like Marshall does don't stay in the minors too long.

C/W Alexander Killorn, HAR: 1-0-1, E, 4 PIM (interference, tripping), 4 SOG

Killorn scored his first official collegiate goal on the power play for the Crimson, but it wasn’t enough as Union broke a 0-6-1 streak against Harvard for the win. Killorn also scored a shorthanded goal late in the third, but the goal was waived off as the refs determined a Crimson player made contact with the Union goalie before the puck went in. According to a USCHO recap, video appeared to show the puck was by Corey Milan before he was interfered with, but the refs did not overturn it. Harvard coach Ted Donato “disagreed” with the call and was ejected for his protest.
