Scouting Report

Scouting Comments:

"A left wing/center who played in the USHL and is going to Vermont. Good size, 5-11 to 6-feet, 195/190 pounds, and a good skill level. Skates well and a good, solid, all-around 2-way player with offensive ability" ... Colton [and Lohin] are guys you get now so you aren't bidding for them in three years as NCAA free agents. -- Lightning Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray.

"Ross is a 96’ Birthday and quickly got put on a lot of scout’s radar due to his excellent play in the USHL Top Prospects game this past year (3G 2A). While we don’t believe that any one game should tell the tale of a player, Ross’s complete body of work in Cedar Rapids this year, as well as his steady progression in his development make him an interesting overage pick for this year’s draft. Ross was Cedar Rapids most prolific scorer all season long, ending the season 14 pts ahead of the next
closest player, despite playing 5 less games. The Robbinsville N.J. native scored 35 goals in 55 games for the Rough Riders which was good for 2nd in the USHL. Ross is a smart and gifted offensive player, he continues to look for ways to improve and better his game. Ross is one of those players that doesn’t need a lot of separation to score and is good at identifying holes and finding a way to get open for the puck. His hockey IQ in the offensive zone is off the charts. Colton still needs to round out the rest of his game; his effort coming back into the play can be lacking and misses opportunities to apply back pressure and force turnovers. Colton is also susceptive to taking bad penalties, some out of frustration. There is no questioning Ross’s offensive instincts and skill. There is a decent chance Ross Colton will hear his name called in this year’s draft but we feel Ross is a prospect we would want to see how he progresses at the college level before making a decision on him. Colton will be off to The University of Vermont in the fall." --'s Black Book

“He’s really smart, he’s competitive, he’s skilled and has a great shot. I think someone will draft him.” - USHL Scout (April 2016) via HP Black Book

Excellent hockey sense and developing skills. Size to compete in the pro ranks.

Has to improve his defensive game to earn ice time as a pro. Should take advantage of big role in Vermont to solidify himself for a contract.

Scoring liner.
