Recently recalled defenseman Doug O'Brien
scored the game winning goal tonight in Springfield's 4-3 OT triumph against Worcester. The Newfoundland born blueliner's sudden death talley capped a remarkable comeback that saw the Falcons crawl out of a 2-0 first period deficit to defeat their Atlantic Division rival.
The Falcons' rally began on a second period marker by all-star representative Craig Darby assisted by Evgeni Artukhin and Derek Bekar. Bekar then struck with 6:43 left in the third period from WHL alumnus Nick Tarnasky
and Darren Reid
to knot the game at 2-2. The Falcons' celebration was short lived however as Worcester struck just four minutes and twenty seven seconds later with what appeared to be the game winning goal by defenseman Brendan Buckley.
Twenty seven seconds later though Nikita Alexeev
capped a game in which he led all players with six shots on goal by sending the game to overtime off a feed from Evgeni Artukhin and Craig Darby. 1:27 into the extra frame O'Brien sent the Falcons to the pay window off of helpers by Marc Busenberg and Nick Tarnasky.
Lightning prospect netminder Brian Eklund
turned away 27 of 30 shots for the win to improve his record to 6-6-0 on the season.
