As had been widely reported in the local Tampa media, Lightning Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced today that prospect goaltender Karri Ramo has been returned to the Norfolk Admirals to begin serving his six-game AHL suspension resulting from an altercation last Friday night's game in which Ramo left the bench during an on-ice brawl. With Olaf Kolzig on IR pending season-ending biceps tendon surgery, prospect netminder Riku Helenius has been subsequently recalled from Norfolk to backup Mike Smith . Helenius has yet to make his NHL debut after being selected by the Lightning in the 1st round of the 2006 draft.
In a related story, Norfolk Admirals General Manager Mike Butters announced today that goaltender Tyler Sims has been signed to a standard Professional Tryout contract, presumably to back up Admirals netminder Mike McKenna while Ramo serves out his suspension. Sims, a 23-year old Fort Wayne native, is a rookie goaltender for the Central Hockey League's Mississippi RiverKings after spending four years playing NCAA hockey for Providence College in the HEAST. He is the career record holder for games played (116) and shutouts (7) at Providence College, and was given the Lou Lamoriello Award as Providence College Team Co-MVP for the 2005-06 season. He was named a Hockey East Academic All-Star in 2004-05 and was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team in 2006-07.
