Alberni Valley Bulldogs 2 @ Victoria Grizzlies 3 (OT)
W Justin Courtnall , VIC: 2-1-3, 2 PIM (roughing), *First Star*
Courtnall scored the games’ opening goal on a penalty shot, then notched the overtime winner on the power play.
Before his first goal, Courtnall slammed into the boards in the first period and according to the Victoria Times Colonist, he was so "groggy" he fell on the way to the bench. With a minute left in the game, and the effects of the injury long gone, Cournall finished a clean, but vicious check on a Bulldog, who had to be helped off the ice. Courtnall got a roughing penalty in the scrum, but drew a fighting major and instigator on another of the Bulldogs. To finish the story - and the game - the newspaper reports when Courtnall's penalty was finished early in the overtime session, "Courtnall came out of the box, picked up a pass from Shaun Stuart, faked his first shot to clear the defenceman out of his path and won the game. "'I saw the far side, and I just got lucky," Courtnall told the paper. 'I hit the pin-point spot I needed.'"
While he scored two goals, the newspaper called Courtnall's hit late in the third period the turning point of the game.
