Bartanus, Owen Sound Drop Opener in Barrie

Marek Bartanus and the Owen Sound Attack fell in their OHL season opener Thursday night 6-4 to the Barrie Colts. Bartanus did not register a point in the game, but did manage an even rating and an accumulation of six official penalty minutes, and a ten minute misconduct which doesn't count toward his penalty minute count. Bartanus was whistled for inteference, unsportsmanlike conduct, and hooking penalties in the game. The two teams accounted for 85 minutes in penalties. Thirty minor penalties were assessed by referees Chris Hodgins and Terry Hobor, 15 to each team. Bartanus's misconduct followed his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which was likely for diving as a Colt was charged with hooking on the play.

Opinion: What The 2005-2006 Falcons Roster Will Look Like

Fran Sypek of the Republican did a good, concise writeup on the impending Falcons training camp Wednesday after the Lightning reassigned 18 players to Springfield. So, with the Falcons' beat writer breaking the tape I believe it can be officially declared that speculating on Springfield's roster to be fair game. In this blog entry I'll give a good crack at it.

Zapletal Back in Europe

After spending last season with Regina of the WHL, defenseman Jan Zapletal has returned to the Czech Republic to play for HC Vsetin of the Extraliga. The 2004 6th round pick had 3 goals and 5 points in 55 games last season for the Pats. He has yet to dress for any of Vsetin's games thus far. Also, goaltender Vasily Koshechkin has reassumed backup duties for Lada Togliatti of the Russian Superleague. An 8th round pick in 2002, Koshechkin played two shutout periods of relief for Togliatti in a 3-1 loss to Yaroslavl on September 17th.

OHL Season Begins

The 2005-06 Ontario Hockey League season got underway last night when Paul Mara's alma mater, the Plymouth Whalers, beat Marek Kvapil's former team, the Saginaw Spirit, 7-2. It looks like Saginaw is in for a long year once again. A Lightning member in Traverse City this year, Spirit defenseman Steve Whitely, was minus-two for the game. Tonight, September 22, Lightning prospects get into action as Marek Bartanus and the Owen Sound Attack visit the Barrie Colts. Bartanus had a goal in Owen Sound's final exhibition game and is expected to provide offense in his first season in North America. Bartanus, a fourth round pick of the Bolts this year, had 14 goals and 14 assists in 34 games for HC Kosice in the Slovakia junior league last year.
