Beech Wins Two at Four-Nations

Riku Helenius wasn't the only Lightning prospect playing in a 4-Nations tournament recently. The Sudbury Wolves, led by goaltender Kevin Beech, won three of three over the past week as Sudbury beat Poland's JKH Black Hawks, the Czech Republic's HC Vitkovice, and Russia's Moscow Dynamo. Beech stopped 21 of 22 shots on August 31 as Sudbury topped JKH 6-1. Lightning prospect camp attendee John D'Aversa scored a power play goal for the Wolves in the game. On Friday, September 1, rookie goaltender Michael Swick was in net as the Wolves beat HC Vitkovice 4-2. Sudbury finished the tournament undefeated as Beech rebounded from a rough start to beat a veteran Moscow Dynamo club 7-3 on September 2. After letting in two goals in the game's first three minutes, Beech allowed only one more the rest of the way, stopping 32 of 35 total shots for his second win. Sudbury scored six power play goals in the game. Ottawa Senators draft pick Nick Foligno was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Ice Dogs and Lightning TCers Combine for Big Preason Win

Lightning prospect Chris Lawrence and Lightning Traverse City invitee Travis Fuller combined for 3 goals and 4 points as the Mississauga Ice Dogs defeated London 5-0 in OHL preseason action last night. The Mississauga News highlighted Fuller, who was acquired from Barrie last year, for his production and work ethic - two ingredients that could earn Fuller a contract with the Lightning in the future. Fuller had two goals and set up Lawrence's marker for the Ice Dogs. Fuller, a six-foot-one-inch winger, had 22 goals and 26 assists for 48 points in Barrie last year. He had a goal and an assist in 5 scrimmage games for Team White in July's prospect camp. Note: Exhibition boxscores are hard to come by in the WHL and OHL, so preseason recaps will be infrequent for the time being.
