According to Tampa Bay Lightning Head Scout Jake Goertzen, the pair of blueliners, Steve Whitely and Ben Chaisson, were left on the Lightning’s 2005 draft list, “and were the next in line on D to be taken.” The third prospect on a tryout agreement is Chicoutimi forward and Lightning draftee Stanislav Lascek teammate Maxime Boisclair. Whitely came to Saginaw in a mid-season trade from Toronto St. Michael’s. In 30 games with Toronto this year, as well as 22 games with Saginaw, Whitely recorded no points. He was a combined -11 with the two clubs and amassed 67 penalty minutes. A 17th round selection of Toronto in the 2004 OHL Priority Draft, Whitely is in the same mold as Lightning prospect Andy Rogers. Upon acquiring Whitely, Saginaw General Manager and Head Coach Bob Mancini said, “Steven will add depth to our defense. He’s a young, big, mobile defenseman with unlimited potential.” Whitely was unranked by Central Scouting. Ben Chaisson, Shawinigan, QMJHL

Another big, mobile defenseman, the undrafted Chaisson, a Nova Scotia native, recorded one goal and two assists to go with 115 minutes in penalties for the Cataractes this year. He was ranked at No. 143 by Central Scouting in the final rankings. Despite having a French last name, Chaisson comes from English speaking parents and had a difficult time adjusting to the language difference in Shawinigan. He moved from an English speaking billet to a couple who speaks French in an effort to become better acclimated.
