NHL Game Night 10/14: Panthers at Lightning

Big win. FLA-1 TB-4 Martin St. Louis finally got his first goal of the season and goals were also added by Lecavalier, Fedotenko and Afansenkov. Overage prospect Eric Perrin got a helper on Afanasenkov's third period wrap around goal. Marc Denis stopped 23 of 24 for the win. Hopefully this game starts to rejuvenate the offense, although Brad Richards still has yet to talley his first goal. Doug Janik was even in 16:14 with 1 shot, 1 hit and 1 block. Eric Perrin was +1 in 13:50 and 50% on draws. Nick Tarnasky played his best game of the year thus far with 2 shots in 5:10. It seems the more the Lightning can get multi-goal leads, the more they'll be willing to give Tarnasky on the job training.

Relief

I took my middle daughter - she's money. Birthday is June 7th by the way. I can't remember the last time (other than preseason) she's seen the Lightning lose, and neither can she. I first noticed it late January 2004. Lightning 6, Philly 1. We were on our way. She was about 6 - 0 the rest of the way. I got away with taking her mom to game 7 of the SCF even though it was her birthday. I believe she attended our 1st ever shootout win last year as well as the playoff clincher against Jersey last year. Walking to the rink tonight my thoughts were on Vinny. I wondered whether we should trade him while he still has good value. I don't think he'll ever reach his potential here unless we have a power forward for him to play with. For us, that leaves Craig. He scored with Ryan on the ice early last night, but the two barely played together after that. Tonight they were together throughout the results were consistently better. I'm not sure that Prospal wouldn't be better with those two than Feds. (Feds' showed when he can get open he's still deadly.) And Feds would be the closest thing to Modin to play with Brad and Marty. I'm a little worried about Richie, by the way. Late in that fight he had a couple of chances to throw punches and didn't. As he was leaving the ice it appeared he was examining his hand/wrist. Affy - He is what he is, a third liner. A good one too. I thought he was maybe our best forward tonight, and that was before he scored. He looked relieved to be down there. I can't believe he didn't score in the 2nd. That puck just rode the goal line and kicked out when it hit the post. If Tort's puts Karlsson on the 3rd and drops Perrin down, he's nuts. They were good all night. The umbrella still doesn't work. The first goal was a broken play (they never got set up) that left Vinny in the middle of the ice instead of hugging the wall. The 'Turds cut off the passing lanes leaving Belfour as the only direction in which to move the puck. The second was the 5 on 3. Vinny was still on the wall, but stayed down low and not out top leaving 2 up and 3 down the entire play. Denis was as good as he had to be and early, that was very good. Janik may be an outstanding pick-up. He's clearly established on the 2nd pair and looking good for the most part. Once he and Kuba get used to each other, they'll likely be our shut-down pair. Sarich has been better lately and he and Pratt are a much better 3rd pair right now than we've seen in a while. Richardson played almost exclusively on the PK that I noticed. Overall the night was much more fun than anything we've seen this season. They carried the puck more against the 1-2-2 and were much more effective that way.

Umbrella's

Don't like the style and it is not working. You are correct for the 2 power play goals it was a broken umbrella that scored. I think the Rammer needs to be relieved of duty on the Power Play design. Let's find someone who has something that works. Offense is a problem but looked much better tonight. Defence - Janik is a real surprise much like Ranger was last year. Perfect, of course not, but much better than anticipated. Ranger is playing like a monster and charging the net on offense. What a concept Vinny ---- maybe take a hint. Goal Tending - No complaints a couple of softies but 10 goals in 5 games is nothing. You would think with the power house we could score more than 2 a game. We are not seeing the blowup's of Burke and Grahame. Burke was lit up last night for 4 goals in 7 shots. Notice that Denis stops the play by getting control of the puck if that continues we will be in a lot of games to the end. Denis GA 1.8 Save % .911 we should be 4 - 0 Coaching - Time for a change on the Power Play design. Do we have someone who can put a plan together. Gone are the Andy's and MO's who where not afraid to drive to the net or park themselves in the slot. No R2N only Craig is left doing just fine but the pretty boys are no where to be found. Vincent needs to take the bull by the horns but he seems only interested when there is no one in the slot to contest the position. There needs to be a change in players and scheme. Let Perrin and Craig each have a line. Both have no fear - Give Tarnasky a shot he is big let him create some space. Power plays mean POWER not pretty passing which they still can't do. How about that 5 pass excursion on the 2 on none Friday night between vinny and marty. A shot would have been nice EH!
