Falcons Add Offense, Bring Back Blatny

The Springfield Falcons have signed winger Zdenek Blatny to a standard AHL contract. Blatny was property of the Lightning last year and appeared in 31 games for the Falcons during the 2005-06 season collecting 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points. “Zdenek is another player that provides us with some scoring depth at the forward position,” said Falcons President and General Manager Bruce Landon in a team release (article not on web site at this time). “Zdenek displayed a strong scoring touch down the stretch last year and has proven he can be a solid point producer for us heading into the 2006-07 campaign.”

Opinion

A shrewd move for Landon/Feaster. Blatny was "supposed to" return to Europe if he couldn't find an NHL job, but it appears either he had a change of heart or Landon/Feaster did some serious selling. While this diminishes the idea of a guy like Smolenak, Lascek, or Keller playing on a top line in SF, the Falcons are MUCH better because of this move and are moving up the "on paper" off-season standings (which essentially means nothing). This DOES allow one, two, or all three of the afore mentioned young offensive TB prospect studs to develop in Johnstown where they should succeed right away with increased ice time and make that team very fun to watch. Landon/Feaster was serious about making the Falcons a playoff team and this goes a long way to making that a possibility. A front line of Healey-Perrin-Blatny should be very good. Intermixing those with Kvapil, etc will also be effective.

I think they'll keep Blatny

I think they'll keep Blatny and Kvapil on the same line, whether that's with Perrin, Jones or even Healey as their center. He was going to return to the Czech Republic if he didn't get an NHL deal, so I wonder how much loot Loiselle and Landon had to throw Zdenek's way to make this happen. Healey/Perrin/Milley Blatny/Jones/Kvapil A lot still depends on who steps up and becomes that second line center.
