History:

Junior Career

Mike Lundin came to the University of Maine out of Apple Valley High School in Minnesota where he was a two sport letterman in both hockey and baseball. In his senior season of high school he had 8 goals and 28 points in 27 games en route to being named Metro Hockey Player of the Year in 2003 by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as well as AP Minnesota Hockey Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Mr. Hockey Minnesota award as well. As a freshman with the Black Bears in 2003-2004 he scored 3 goals and 19 points in 44 games. At season's end he was also named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team and the NHL Central Scouting Service ranked him the 34th best North American skater. That summer he was selected in the 4th round by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Upon returning to Maine for his sophomore season, Lundin slumped in the first half of the year and despite rebounding in the second half his production declined to 1 goal and 14 points in 40 games. He was once again named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team. As a junior is 2005-2006, Lundin posted a nearly identical 2 goal and 15 point campaign in 35 games helping the Black Bears advance to the Frozen Four where they were eliminated by eventual champion Wisconsin. Also, as a junior, Lundin was named to the Hockey East Academic Honor Roll and he was named a Maine Scholar-Athlete. In 2006-2007 Lundin was named one of Maine's assistant captains as a senior. As a senior, Lundin finally managed to surpass his original freshman scoring totals by notching 6 goals and 20 points in 40 games as a minute eating anchor on the Maine power play. Lundin won Maine's Shawn Walsh Defensive Player Award as a senior and was named to the NCAA Tournament's East Region All-Tournament Team. He also was named to the Hockey East's All-Academic Team for a fourth time to earn Distinguished Scholar status for acheiving a 3.0 GPA or better for four straight years.

Professional Career

The Lightning are likely to sign Lundin this summer and due to the lack of offensive defensemen in the system he may be quickly advanced into a power play role with Norfolk of the AHL.

Scouting Report

Strengths:

An excellent skater and puckhandler, Lundin can play in all game situations and has proven to be a minute-eater for the University of Maine. He’s a smart player with good hands and delivers crisp, but soft outlet passes to his forwards. He sees the ice well and is a team leader.

Weaknesses:

Lundin is not a physical defenseman, but that doesn’t mean he’s not effective along the walls. He tends to rely on using his stick rather than his body, which has worked for him thus far but may not at the next level. He has a good shot but doesn’t look to jump into the play as often as he could. Perhaps he’s coached not to, though with his skating ability, he certainly can make up for mistakes by getting back to his own zone quickly. His key to the NHL is the development of his physical game – not necessarily becoming a Scott Stevens-like hitter, but learning to physically battle on the ice for loose pucks or position whenever necessary.

Projection:

Lundin is just 12 days younger than current Lightning rookie defenseman Paul Ranger, but the two – at times – look like twins in their styles. If Lundin adds Ranger’s tenacity and work ethic, there’s no reason why he can’t be a second pair defenseman to compliment some of the bigger, more physical defensemen in the Lightning system. Lundin’s passing ability is not at Ranger’s level at this point, but Lundin will be looked upon for offense and power play contributions in the coming years.
