    Seven straight wins over Atlanta.

Mike Smith allowed 2 goals on 30 shots for the win. That might have been the best Smitty has played since his concussion problems knocked him off track. That was encouraging. He moved well and he played an efficient style.

    First Period
    03:10 TB Clark (2), St Louis (5), Stamkos (6)(PP)
    16:05 TB Lecavalier (2), Bergenheim (2) 17:50
TB Stamkos (6), Lecavalier (2), St Louis (6)(PP)

    Second Period
    08:07 ATL Slater (1), Ladd (5), Byfuglien (4)
    17:22 TB Stamkos (7), (unassisted)

    Third Period
    13:36 ATL Byfuglien (2), (unassisted)(PP)
    19:28 TB Stamkos (8), V. Hedman (5)(EN)

Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier were the game's first and second stars.

I thought the Lightning's effort level was outstanding, but I wouldn't say they were super-crisp. There's still another gear the Lightning haven't quite found yet in the early season, which should be a bit terrifying for the rest of the league. Their breakout and passing still needs a little work. There's too many soft passes, and still a lot of feeling out of new teammates. Once that part starts to click, the Lightning are going to be a mother to play against.

Dana Tyrell had 2 penalty minutes and 2 shots in 11:09. He looks like he's getting a little more comfortable each game, and he even got a couple of PK shifts tonight. I also like that he's getting shots on goal. That first NHL goal will follow pretty soon.

Is The Cat back? For the first time in about a month, Vasily Koshechkin played like Vasily Koshechkin, making 35 saves in Cherepovets' 2-1 overtime win over Dynamo Minsk. Forward Alexei Tsvetkov had the winning goal and an assist for Severstal in the match.

    Bizarrely officiated game.

    TB-2 (OT)

Dan Ellis allowed 3 goals on 25 shots for the loss.

    First Period
    02:15 NYI Grabner (2), Niederreiter (1), Weight (5)
    18:05 TB Bergenheim (2), Purcell (5), Hedman (4)

    Second Period
    04:44 TB St Louis (2), Stamkos (5), Lundin (1)
    10:00 NYI Parenteau (2), Wisniewski (5), Tavares (2)(PP)

    Third Period

    01:56 NYI Moulson (4), Nielsen (4), Mottau (3)

You know, just a strange night when you see two Islanders goals that were initially waved off turned into goals. You also saw a ridiculous one-sided call against Ryan Malone on the first half of the 2-man advantage the Isles scored on and then the bizarre double call on the Isles afterward where Matt Smaby climbed in the box for what turned out to be no reason. Bizarre officiating. It was a mediocre game for the Lightning playing against an inferior opponent that has a few of its best players out injured. They should've handled their business and they didn't. But, on the other hand, strange. I'd be more upset if the Lightning didn't at least get a point out of the night.

Dana Tyrell had 1 shot in 9:09. The partial breakaway he generated was the first exhibition of what Tyrell's speed can do at the NHL level.

    Sodertalje 3 @ AIK 2
    Riku Helenius, Sodertalje, DNP
    Season totals: 6 GP, 0-5-0, 0 SO, 2.77 GAA, .879 sv%

Riku Helenius once again sat backup to Pontus Sjogren today in Sodertalje's 3-2 win over AIK. Former St. Cloud State forward Ryan Lasch and veteran Swedish forward Joakim Eriksson both scored third period goals from Sodertalje to pull out the win.

    Ekaterinburg 4 @ Kazan 3
    Dmitri Kazionov, Kazan, 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM, 0 SOG
    Season totals: 8 GP, 1-1-2, -1, 6 PIM

Dmitri Kazionov assisted on a Jarkko Immonen goal in 15:49 of ice time as Kazan fell to Ekaterinburg 4-3. Long time Russian veteran Andrei Subbotin had one goal and one assist for Ekaterinburg.

    Astana 1 @ Novokuznetsk 2 (OT)
    Denis Kazionov, Novokuznetsk, DNP
    Season totals: 3 GP, 0-1-1, -2, 27 PIM

Ex-Penguins draft pick Alexei Krivchenkov scored with forty-four seconds left in overtime to lead Novokuznetsk to a 2-1 win over Astana. Not suprisingly, Lightning prospect Denis Kazionov did not play after being kicked out of Novokuznetsk's last game for spearing.

    PEI Rocket 2 @ Montreal Juniors 5
D Charles Landry, MTL: Did not play.
    Season Totals: 4 GP, 0-1-1, +4, 0 PIM

Landry still isn’t back from injury, but is expected to return to the ice soon.

Plymouth Whalers 4 @ Owen Sound Attack 5
    D Geoffrey Schemitsch, OS: 0-0-0, +1, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 10 GP, 1-5-6, +7, 2 PIM

Owen Sound is ranked No.5 in the latest CHL Top-10.

Lethbridge Hurricanes 4 @ Regina Pats 3 (SO)
RW Carter Ashton, REG: 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM (slashing)
    Season totals: 10 GP, 3-2-5, -7, 21 PIM

Ashton was the third and final shooter for the Pats in the shootout, but he hit the post and couldn’t extend the tie-breaker. Ashton is tied for sixth on the club in scoring, behind two defensemen. His minus-7 rating is tied for third worst on the team. The Regina newspaper reported this week it’s not a matter of “if,” but “when” and “where” Ashton gets traded within the WHL, but Regina needs for him to play to his 1st round capabilities so they can maximize the return for their rebuilding effort. Regina is tied for the fewest points in the league with Kelowna at 2-7-1-1.

Brandon Wheat Kings 3 @ Prince George Cougars 5
RW Brett Connolly, PG: 2-0-2, +1, 0 PIM, *Second Star*
    Season totals: 11 GP, 11-7-18, +3, 4 PIM

Connolly ran his point streak to 11 games and his goal streak to 6 games with his second straight 2-goal game. He’s scored at least twice in 3 of his last 4 games. Reigning WHL and CHL Player of the Week Sena Acolatse, a right-handed, undrafted, overage defenseman, had 2 assists in the game. Acolatse has 13 points in 8 games this season with Prince George since coming over from Saskatoon.

    Cherepovets 4 @ Dynamo Riga 2
    Vasily Koshechkin, Cherepovets, DNP
    Season totals: 10 GP, 4-6-0, 1 SO, 2.77 GAA, .906 sv%

Martins Karsums, Dynamo Riga, 0-0-0, -1, 2 PIM, 1 SOG
    Season totals: 16 GP, 7-5-12, +5, 22 PIM

I guess we can officially say Vasily Koshechkin has lost his starting job for Cherepovets. He sat on the bench as Rostislav Stana stopped 26 shots in Severstal's 4-2 win over Riga. Riga forward Martins Karsums was -1 and had a tripping minor in 13:59 of ice time. Ex-Lightning forward Martin Cibak had a goal in the match for Cherepovets.
