    World Junior A Challenge

    Sweden 1 vs. USA 5
    C Jimmy Mullin, USA: 1-0-1, 0 PIM
    Tournament totals: 2 GP, 4-0-4, 0 PIM

Mullin scored his tournament-leading fourth goal early in the first period, and the Americans scored three more in the second before Sweden found the scoresheet as USA easily disposed of the Swedes 5-1 in Penticton, B.C. USA is looking for its third-straight gold medal. They stand alone at the top of the standings with six points after two games and along with Switzerland will get a bye to the semifinals.

Canada West 4 vs. Russia 2
    C Brendan O’Donnell, CW: 0-0-0, 0 PIM
    Tournament totals: 2 GP, 0-1-1, 0 PIM

Canada West had a 2-0 lead midway through the game, but that quickly vanished by the end of the second period. Tied at 2 entering the third, Canada scored twice in the final frame to take the win. They will play Sweden on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

    Oshawa Generals 4 @ Belleville Bulls 0
G Michael Zador, OSH: Did not play.
    Season Totals: 7-3-1-1, 3.48 GAA, .880 sv%, 1 SO
    C/W Richard Panik, BEL: 0-0-0, E, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 19 GP, 11-11-22, +1, 25 PIM

Belleville only managed 16 shots against Zador’s (former?) backup Kevin Bailie, who was getting his second straight start. The Bulls have been searching for offense as a whole all season.

Portland Winterhawks 5 @ Regina Pats 4 (OT)
RW Carter Ashton, REG: 1-0-1, -2, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 18 GP, 8-7-15, -8, 34 PIM

This was a good showing for the Pats against the league’s top team. Portland needed a late goal to force overtime. Blue Jackets first round pick Ryan Johansen had a goal for Portland, his eighth of the year, and Islanders first rounder Nino Niederreiter went without a point against Regina. After a slow start, Ashton has 12 points in his last 10 games, including goals in his last two.

    The machine keeps rolling.

Cedrick Desjardins allowed 3 goals on 25 shots for the win. Gotta love six goals of support.

    First Period
NOR Jones, (5) (Pouliot, Harju), 6:23
NOR Szczechura, (6) (Wishart, Roy), 16:45 (PP)
NOR Giliati, (1) (Angelidis, Gudas), 17:25
NOR Wright, (4) (Szczechura, Fornataro), 18:20
ALB Anderson, (4) (Urbom, Zharkov), 19:10

    Second Period
ALB Palmieri, (3) (Urbom, Sestito), 3:13
ALB Anderson, (5) (Fayne, Zharkov), 15:42
NOR Harju, (7) (Roy, Wishart), 18:14 (PP)

    Third Period
NOR Fornataro, (4) (Wright, Barberio), 9:41

James Wright and Matt Fornataro were the game's first and third stars. Norfolk's 51 goals scored so far this season is currently tied for third behind Portland and Oklahoma City. Marc-Antoine Pouliot is tied for fourth in the league with 18 points with, among others, Oklahoma City's Linus Omark. He's also third in the league in helpers. Johan Harju is tied for eighth in the league in scoring with 16 points. Harju's 7 goals also ties him for ninth in the league in that category. Ty Wishart and Mathieu Roy are tied for seventh in the league in points among defensemen with 10 a piece.

    Bottom line, they're good.

Seattle Thunderbirds 5 @ Saskatoon Blades 4 (SO)
    D Teigan Zahn, SAS: 0-1-1, E, 0 PIM
    Season totals: 19 GP, 1-5-6, +7, 32 PIM

Saskatoon allowed 2 third period goals, enabling Seattle to tie the game. The Thunderbirds then scored once in the shootout for the win. With his assist Tuesday, Zahn extended his point streak to a career-long 4 games. While that may be ho-hum for some, considering Zahn only had 3 points (all assists) all of last season, it’s a major achievement. His career high for points is 19, set in 2007-2008 with the Blades in 69 games. He was drafted by the Blackhawks in the fifth round after that season.

The Lightning made Toronto look like an AHL team, and it wasn't nearly Tampa Bay's best effort.

Dan Ellis stopped all 28 shots he faced for the shutout. He made key saves when the Lightning needed them to make sure the Leafs didn't sustain a comeback surge. Very good effort.

    First Period
    11:10 TB Stamkos (12), St Louis (9), Lecavalier (6)(PP)
    11:39 TB Thompson (1), Lundin (3), Tyrell (1)
    19:13 TB Moore (5), Jones (4), Malone (7)

    Second Period

    Third Period
    05:46 TB Stamkos (13), Hall (3),Ohlund (1)

Dan Ellis, Steven Stamkos, and Dominic Moore were the game's three stars. The Lightning got away with sleepwalking through the second period because they're just a superior team talent-wise relative to Toronto and because Ellis played well tonight. I suspect Boucher will not let the Lightning get to happy about this win, because they didn't play as well as the scoreboard indicates. Still, it's a good way to snap a three game skid and, for the moment, climb back withing two points of the Caps in the division. To me that's the key. The Lightning need to maintain contact with Washington in the standings and hope they can win the balance of the head-to-head matches with Washington. If they do that, they can be a one or two seed in the East at season's end. And, what the Lightning should know from the 2003-2004 campaign is that being a top seed can really help you by giving you two easier rounds to get settled into the playoffs before the bombs start dropping in the conference finals.

Stupid Canadian media moment of the night: Sportsnet Canada's studio hosts claiming that the Lightning simply had to trade Steven Stamkos to Boston for draft picks. They must've smoked their body weight in dope before going on camera. Don't do drugs, kids, or you might end up as a studio host in Toronto being forced to watch 82 games of a horrible hockey team.

Mattias Ritola had 1 hit in 9:56. As I've said before, he's an NHLer from the blueline in.

Dana Tyrell had an assist and was +1 with 1 shot and 1 blocked shot in 14:11. Another high intensity night for Dana. I liked it. He was a thorn in Toronto's side.
