This shows what kind of teammate JP Cote is. He sees Oleksy going after Conacher all shift and doesn't hesitate to go right after him even though their in the offensive zone.

Will his role be an enforcer or a defensive defenseman who is willing to drop the gloves?

Defensive d man that is willing to drop the gloves. Cote isn't one that'll go out and look for a fight like say BJ Crombeen does but he's a big hitter and a stand up guy so if he throws a hit and someone challenges him he will fight and if you cheap shot a teammate he will be in there to drop his gloves. He's a pretty bad fighter overall but he does have an impressive fight card. Kinda like a Shane O'Brien type in a way if you want a comparison. If he's solid it's possible he might take a job from Barberio or Aulie and since it's two year contract it means they want him for a reason.

Assuming Headmen returns this weekend, that would give you a third pair of Cote/Suster. Assuming they get 3rd pair minutes and he lives up to what he has done in SYR here, I really like the potential of that combo...

I honestly think Yzerman felt you don't need any sort of toughness/net clearing in this NHL, and maybe he is realizing he is wrong about that.

Any defensive-minded help for our quavering backline is a good thing...Brewer wearing no. 2 has been way too appropriate here lately As to Côté, from his assist totals it looks like somebody's got a pretty good pass out of the zone and/or a decent shot from the point

Good size, willing to rack up the PMs--but hopefully taking someone off with him rather than putting us in more PK situations. I'm really glad Yz likes guys with some size and is willing to lay aside his disgust with fighting for the sake of his (super)star goalie. The crashing our crease has gone on waaayyy too long.
