To me, at first, you build a program that attracts fringe USHL, NAHL, and prep players who maybe can't get into the big programs but want to play Div. 1 for a couple of years at USF and then try to attract someone to accept a transfer to their school. And, you try to get the kids of ex-Lightning and Panthers players who maybe also can't quite get into the big time programs.

In the long run, you hope having the option of a Div. 1 program brings up the level of your grassroots youth hockey to the point they start supplying players to the school, too.

UAH isn't the only off-the-beaten path school with a hockey program, btw. We do have a d-man from Nebraska-Omaha playing on the Lightning right now, after all.
That is the bigger question, why not add both gender teams?

You are right Pete, because the outlay of money would make more sense er cents, as I stated in my previous post thanking dannybolt for interpreting my original comments correctly. There are high school hockey teams in Tampa now and a number of my past and current students play and would robably love to play in college, especially close to home.

Looking forward to these games. I attended every game the last time they were here and it was great hockey.

Agree - it was great. The only thing that would have made it better would have been for a Bolt prospect to have been in the game(s).

Thought this was really interesting. We might add the World Junior Hockey Championships next to the Frozen Four as a feather in our cap.

Tampa may bid for World Junior Hockey

Quote:
CALGARY, Alberta — As the two-week World Junior Hockey Championship winds down this weekend in Sweden, visionaries in Tampa hope to bring the tournament to town in the near future.

Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Sports Commission, said Friday preliminary talks have been held with the Tampa Bay Lightning and USA Hockey about the prospect of hosting the event, which features 10 international teams comprised of the best under-20 players in the world.

“We’ve started to lay the groundwork to learn more about the bid process,” Higgins said. “I’ve had some initial correspondence with USA Hockey, and we are still a ways off from the official bid process, but it’s definitely an event we would like to learn more about.”

The next tournament scheduled to be in the United States is the 2018 championship, which begins Dec. 26, 2017.

The bidding process for potential host cities will begin in the spring of 2015, with a final decision made in the fall of 2015, USA Hockey spokesman Dave Fisher said.

The United States has hosted the event four times (2011, 2005, 1996, 1989) since it started in 1977.

While the Forum would serve as the main venue for games, including the semifinal and championship games, a second venue is required. Germain Arena in Estero, home of the Florida Everblades in the East Coast Hockey League, is a likely candidate.

Not to take anything away from Estero but it'd be nice if the Sundome was able to serve as site B.

Keeping the whole event Tampa centric.

Honestly, the only place it is remotely close to a big deal or a sellout is Canada, but I think we might do OK just for the "warm place to go in December/January" factor.
