Getting a sense Phil Kessel's contract extension in TOR could get done as early as Tues. Leafs and Kessel's agents working towards that.

But no one has confirmed it's done yet. So we'll see. If it's done, I would expect it'll be $8M per year, give or take $500K, for 7 or 8 yrs
Lockout? What lockout?

Dayum, $8 mil for Kessel?

The definition of insanity, the NHL has it.

In this instance, I'd put more of the insanity on Nonis rather than the NHL as a whole.

Default Cap

How does that affect the Leafs cap problems? Does the contract take effect this year or next year?

Next year. It's an extension.

This is a go-to line but, really, Kessel's contract is the exact intended byproduct of the most-recent lockout. His cap hit, or AAV (average annual value), will closely reflect his yearly salary, particularly because the 8-year limit to contracts (for players you're attempting to re-sign, 7 for free-agents) prevents the back-diving salary figures that drove down the cap hits for stars under the terms of the previous CBA.

Kessel is being paid, salary-wise, what is probably close to his market value and Toronto isn't able to structure the deal in way for his cap hit to not reflect that.
