Default Drouin

I'm thinking he probably gets a few (up to 9, obviously) NHL games to start the season so SFY can take a little longer look at him, but I'm thinking the Lightning will probably send him back to juniors, and bring up Connolly if he doesn't make the team directly out of camp. They can afford it. Thoughts.

I agree. That seems to be the best of suboptimal options. I don't see the point of keeping him around all year if he's not going to get a lot of ice time.

The other thing about Drouin is that of all the prospect foward options, he has by far the greatest cap hit due to the lottery pick max rookie salary he got.

Sort of. Most of that is in the form of performance bonuses, for which the the rules have changed with the new CBA. He's only actually counting for his base salary and signing bonus right now, which is roughly $1m (off the top of my head). If he were to play in the NHL and earn some or all of his performance bonuses, that amount would be applied to TB's cap figure next season.

Does the kid have anything left to learn in juniors?

How to be the undisputed leader/best player on his team.

Fact is, he split the glory last year with MacKinnon, and some haters even go so far as to say his success was largely a product of MacKinnon. If they decide to send Drouin back to juniors, the mindset they need to send him back with is with the mission to prove he was never riding on MacKinnon's coattails and that he is the undisputed best player in the QMJHL, hands down, no questions asked.

He could also learn to play center there, as a little bonus.

Absolutely. That, and he can learn to be able to play comfortably at any forward position, in any situation.

And the word "undisputed" is key. The things that Lightning liked about Drouin is that when MacKinnon was out, he elevated his game.

Publicly, they say that Drouin and MacKinnon made each other better. Privately, I think they would say that Drouin did more for MacKinnon than the other way around.

If those who carefully track and know this part thoroughly are correct in saying our depth is such that he simply gets edged out of a roster spot, then isn't that the case whether he's the best or second best player in the Q? Doesn't seem to make that much diff, really...
