Not thrilled with this at all. Believe he mostly played wing (and did so with Datsyuk in his only 60pt season).

It's easy to see the Vinny buyout & Filppula deal and think "Filppula replaces Vinny", but I think it all had more to do with the young guys extensions coming up in a few seasons.
And I just remembered we have to consider the recapture penalties if Vinny retired early and just the continued length of it too. That was the real killer.

Vinny would have a 7.7 million cap hit at age 40 when his contract ends

Filppula would have a 5 million cap hit at age 33 when his contract ends. Plus he is tradeable and relatively healthy unlike Vinny.

It's THN, but it sums it up quicker than I can.

Assets: Owns very good playmaking skills and great speed. Is creative, plays a mature game and possesses two-way acumen. Always works hard, is very dedicated and responsible in his own end. Can play all three forward positions.

Flaws: Must continue to get stronger in order to better handle physical opponents. Is only average in the goal-scoring department; it wouldn't hurt if he started to utilize his vast tool-set much more to put up even better numbers.

Career Potential: Quality two-way forward.

Only thing that concerns me is the term. But looking at the market, we gave up no youth, and paid the going rate for a 2C, market factors considering.

Think about this though.

Filppula - $5m per year, 5 years. Flexible player. Can transition to the wing easily in a year or two when we don't rush our kids, and they are adequately ready for the role.

Clarkson - $5.25 per year, 7 years. 3rd line player who scored a lot of goals once, and is an excellent two way guy but really, a solid 3rd line guy.

We got a 2C, who is flexible, capable, and able to handle the load for the price that the market bears, without giving up any of our youth. He's also relatively young, so he's not an aging vet which means this deal likely ends up having some trade value near the end of it.

I'd rather have him than Weiss, and I have a feeling his 2011-12 season is representative of what we'll get.

Agreed. He's all kinds of fast. Smart, and I think he'll fit Coop's style really well.

Seems like market rate with some of the silliness going on tiday. It's not so bad compared to what's gone down today and he should be a better fit than Weiss, but I'd prefer a shorter term. Kind of surprised Yzerman didn't get any sort of discount, especially considering he was one of the last forwards signed and a lot of us expected this would happen.

And in far better fashion than would have been the case w/ Antropov

Agreed. Five million a year, and the Stamkosian term of half a decade,...both numbers are too large, but I'm glad we got this dealt with.

Now please address the 800-lb. gorilla riding the elephant in the room. Not mentioning names, but the initials are D.

Here's a highlight reel of every goal he scored in 2011-12.
