This is a tad on the long side, but I guess it's what was needed to get someone.

Seems a lot for a player who only scored over 60 points once in his career.

What's the scoop on him?

So we gained $2.5 million a year in cap space from the Vinny buyout ultimately? Or am I characterizing that wrong? Not making a judgment, just wondering if that's the correct talking point.

I think the cap difference is closer to 2.7 million between he and vinny. Filppula is a good 2 way forward with good playmaking skills. 5 mil is a bit much though

For the next 5 years, we gained 2.727 in cap space. Then for the next (2?) years we gained the full 7.727.

I think the key here is that we will be able to use the extra space (however much or little) on (hopeful) Stamkos & Hedman decisions.

It's easy to see the Vinny buyout & Filppula deal and think "Filppula replaces Vinny", but I think it all had more to do with the young guys extensions coming up in a few seasons.

He hasn't taken a ton of faceoffs but he is around 55% for his career which is really good. So that was addressed.
