Another view of the deal.

From the Times
QUOTE
The Lightning, theoretically, would have sent Lecavalier and a prospect to the rolling-in-dough Maple Leafs who would then use an amnesty buyout on Lecavalier, making him a free agent. Tampa Bay would then re-sign Lecavalier to a more affordable contract. The Lightning gets to keep Lecavalier, saves a ton of money and the Maple Leafs get a prospect.

The league, though, apparently views such a scenario, no matter the teams or players involved, as a circumvention of its long-standing prohibition against renegotiating contracts.

Default Huh

I think this is a rumor and not true. Why would we lose our #2 center and allow him to become a free agent without a new contract in place or a guarantee he would resign with us. Sounds very unrealistic and too good to be true. This rumor was started by Brooks and it just does not seem real to me.

I don't doubt they looked into the idea but if they honestly thought the league wouldn't come after them for it then they aren't very intelligent. They chased down New Jersey for the Kovy deal, could you imagine what they would do for this?

My sentiments exactly. Collusion and tampering at the same time. They could drop a hammer the size of Texas if something like this happened, even before they nixed the idea

True, it is Brooks, which probably means it's pure bullshit. I bet he floated the idea himself to an NHL executive, using Lecavalier as an example, and they shot it down.

Now with the buyout of VL I wonder if there was some truth to this.

Let me ask you this.......did the GMs also close the loophole for players picked up on waivers and then released by the new club?
