Default Lightning agree to terms with Swiss Forward Retu Suri

2 way 1 way deal for the 14/15 season.

Quote:
Swiss star Retu Suri has agreed to terms with the Lightning on a one-year, two-way contract that won't kick in until the 2014-15 season, Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said.

Suri, a left wing, wants to play one more season with Zug in the Swiss elite league to further develop his game and to have the best chance to play on the Swiss national team in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

I didn't know you could sign a future contract in the NHL.

Has been clarified as for next year, this will allow club to retain rights for 3 years. He is expected to come over in 2014.

Basically, he signed a one year deal for 2013-2014 but he and the team have an understanding that he'll be playing in Switzerland. But, this way, they retain his rights for three years.

Suri wants to develop one more year in Switzerland as that will give him his best shot at making the Olympic squad.

So now the question becomes, is he a Brunner or a Brunnstrom? I know nothing about this kid other than stats. Glad his name is dissimilar at least.

RLR ranked him the 11th best European FA of Interest in their Draft Guide:

Quote:
11. Reto Suri/LW (Switzerland) — Zug. 6-0/185. 25 Mar 89. Same with Suri as with Hollenstein: “the Swiss factor.” Aggressively drives the net and generally plays a courageous, high-tempo game, backed by decent size, strength and drive. Has a quick release and a knack for scoring some big goals. Always very quick to find and pounce on loose pucks in scoring areas.

Brunner came out swinging, was terrible in the latter half of the season, and really picked it back up towards the end and during the playoffs. Definite NHL/North American schedule wall.

Unless Suri blows the doors off in 14-15 camp, I'd like to see him start in the AHL. Hopefully this isn't another Harju/Persson situation and he has a good attitude when he does come over.

I wonder if this signing is preemptive "restocking" of the forward system as there are plans in the short term to move some prospect depth in exchange for veteran NHL roster defensive help?

Even if they don't move any of the young forwards, enough of them are going to move up to create a need for more forwards in Syracuse.
