Because the owners wanted more leverage last time and the differences were greater then.

That has to be a fake report. That's just atrocious.

Well it now becomes clear why the lightning fired their hockey client support staff back in late spring. They won't be needing them for next year.
Also, mentioned by one of the bloggers that the contract numbers for Purcell make lots of sense if you are saying that next year is a lost contract year and he is an UFA next year. Some had mentioned that we might play under the current contract for another year - well good luck with that if these are the demands. So it's the billionaires versus the millionaires and we the fan bend over for the normal colonoscopy and about the outcome. Bye Bye Hockey and Bye Bye Bolts and we get our lives back from the world of sports.

That's just the start of the negotiations. Hopefully the league is really expecting much less on each of those points.
I agree they're being ridiculous. BTW, I'm selling my 2005 Jeep Liberty w/ 175,000 miles on it. I want $45,000 for it. |

Story was broke by Lavoie at RDS. He's as reliable as it comes. It's real.

And no mention yet of the impending (unnecessary and senseless) REALIGNMENT that the league is all hot to trot for. I don't remember which Tampa sportswriter said it, but basically it was, switch CBJ to the west and put DET in the east. The paragraph ended succinctly, as should the debate, as follows:
"Boom. Done." Course that'd be too easy. The two sides had SIX YEARS to prepare for this without another stoppage. Six years. They are going to look like the biggest gang of petty, petulant, ineffectual, infighting idiots since the US Federal Government if they lose another season or even have any labor stoppage at all. Plus, the damage it will do to the game of hockey can't even be measured. I already hate summer. I don't need another 12 months of it. One cheek is the NHL, the other the NHLPA...and we hold the stick: ![]()

There's no way the NHL expects those points to be accepted immediately. Start high, negotiate your way down - Negotiation 101.
They're talking in July. No need to get worried yet.

Negotiation 101 should also tell you that if your initial offer is so far overboard and unrealistic, you poison the well right from the start and have little or no chance of the other side taking you seriously.
