Default Ads Sign Langelier-Parent

Interesting twist in the TBL-Norfolk future relationship took an interesting turn today IMO. Norfolk announced that they signed forward Maxime Langelier-Parent to a one-year AHL contract today that starts next season and includes a club option for 2013-14 (although he will report to Norfolk later in the month on an ATO).

On the surface, just another AHL signing, but... Langelier-Parent is a graduating senior from McGill University and would have been recruited by TBL assistant coach Marty Raymond, who was then McGill head coach.

My raised eyebrow over this signing is that BriseBois signing of this player likely came in-part at recommendation from Raymond and the fact that it is a one (or two) year commitment starting next season. If the Bolts were not planning on being in Norfolk next season, I'm not sure why the signing happened now and for a team that BriseBois wouldn't be affiliated with next season if the Bolts were moving. Looks like they would wait about signing him until they officially moved into a new affiliate. Signing AHL only contracts normally isn't a high priority at this time of the season. Makes me wonder about the whole Crunch thing...

From the presser...

Langelier-Parent, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound center from Léry, Québec, scored 12 goals and 18 points in 28 regular season games for McGill. He helped the Redmen to their first-ever Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championship on March 25. In 45 games overall in 2011-12, Langelier-Parent had 16 goals and 32 points with 97 penalty minutes, two power play goals and four game-winning goals. He also set a school record with six shorthanded goals in 2011-12.

Langelier-Parent, an alternate captain who is expected to graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Arts in economics, posted 47 goals and 117 points with 316 penalty minutes in 174 games during his four seasons with McGill. He has also tallied a school record 11 shorthanded goals and 10 game-winning markers.

What made Conacher's AHL contract a lock for the Bolts was that the GM in Norfolk is Julien BriseBois, the AGM for the Lightning. BriseBois wasn't going to release Conacher from his AHL contract to sign with any other team but the Lightning.

Jacko, I think you are picking up on the veiled point I was trying to make. Clearly, Langelier-Parent has ties with some folks in the organization. But his contract is with Norfolk, so if the Bolts move their affiliation next season, Langelier-Parent stays behind and remains with Norfolk and basically is just another player on an AHL contract.

The more I think about this and read these tea leaves, the more I'm convinced the Lightning are staying in Norfolk next season. This signing would be super odd for a lame duck organization on the way out the door in a couple of months. The fact, however, that Langelier-Parent was signed to a one-year AHL deal starting next season with a club-option for the 2013-14 makes me think the Lightning are only committing to one more season with the Admirals. The club option for 2013-14 gives the new organization an out with Langelier-Parent if the Bolts moves their affiliation in 2013, but if they re-up with Norfolk beyond 2013, the Bolts can continue their development of Langelier-Parent in Norfolk they desire.

Again, just an odd signing for organization planning on announcing an affiliation change later in the month.

Timothy - If your reasoning is correct, you would make ALOT of people in Norfolk very happy!

I learned something today... I spoke with someone in the Norfolk organization and was told that all contracts - NHL or AHL - stay with the parent club.

So... any player signed to an AHL deal by Tampa stays with Tampa. Which means if Tampa does move to Syracuse next season, then Langelier-Parent would go with them.

I did not know that.

That's the agreement TBL has in place with Norfolk. That may not be indicative of all agreements between parent clubs and minor teams.
