Totally...wide open down the slot...54 g, gunning for 60...3 seconds left, no danger of a turnover costing us...much easier pass than shot...entire team on and off the ice screaming to pass it...and that'll be Pyatt's least satisfying NHL goal for a long, long time to come. Notice, no hugs & high fives, just an indifferent shrug from Marty St. Louis.
One of those rare times when, if you pass, even if no goal results you earn respect & kudos; but if you shoot, even if it goes in you're the goat dopey rook mistake Edit to add: Oops. OK, NOW he has 54.

I think there's a little bit of overanalyzing there. You have to stick to your hockey instincts, and Stamkos was pretty well covered.

The puck was rolling on him, too. I was hoping he'd pass it over but after watching the play, it was better for him to shoot.

Watching it live I thought Pyatt made the right choice. The puck wasn't sitting down nice and a weak pass across the middle could have been picked-off and taken down for a scoring attempt.
After seeing a replay, it looks like St. Louis was mostly open and there was a chance that Pyatt could have got it to Stamkos, but, hindsight is 20/20.

You have the puck with the open net, you shoot if there is any doubt of the pass not making it. I'm sure he would have loved to get it to Stammer, but you can't get angry at him for doing what he did.

I don't really get why anyone is upset with Pyatt taking the shot. He had the puck and an empty net in front of him, not really the time to be considerate. It's nice when they are(Stammer feeding Marty his hat trick goal) but no one should be upset with him.
