I wouldn't read too much into it like that. He has more skill than those two do, though.

Yzerman said in camp that he will add skill and quality whenever he gets the chance. He wants better depth.

Woodlief on Gauthier from October 2009:

Next up is Danick Gauthier from St. John. At 6-2/183, he's not quite as large as Aubry, but still has fine size and natural athleticism and plays a flashier offensive game. He's got tremendously soft hands and slick moves that make him dangerous in 1-on-1 situations and loves to use the spin-a-rama directly into a deceptive backhander. Gauthier is very involved in the offensive end and creates loads of chances, heading straight to net where he can use his long reach and good body positioning around the crease.

Low risk, sounds like a decent signing to me.

What NHLer did Kyle compare him to?

Didn't. That was all there was on him as it was an early year scouting notebook story.

From what I'm reading, he's changed his game quite a bit.

It also appears we won a bidding war for him.

RLR had him ranked #170 for the 2010 draft:

"Limited skills, but gives you everything he's got."
