Do they want us to take this seriously or like it's a big joke? Whoever told him it was OK to go on camera--or anywhere outside--wearing a three-piece suit with that dopey toque (we called it sock hat up north) needs to have what's under their own hat examined.
The director blew it IMO...Stamkos has got such beautiful, glowing, flowing hair, he's got a hair-care endorsement...wouldn't that be better for this spot anyway? It's OK to smile at the idea, plus I'm being straight here, as in not kidding. The hat is so bad it's distracting [OK, just went back and re-read it, and I'm not changing a word...]

So, in NHL.com's mock draft, we get Alex Galchenyuk 6th, and Malcom Subban 24th. Realistic?

I think finding Lecavalier's replacement should be in the cards with the draft either this year or next year. In my opinion if the Top defensemen that SFY is targeting are gone at 6, I would jump on Galchenyuk for sure. Subban is more of a wild card but his brother can play so who knows? Would not surprise me to see us go D, D in the 1st round though with the huge glut of forward depth we have in Norfolk right now.

With both our 1st round choices this year, we need to take defensemen. However, my guess is that the DRW 1st rounder will be used to (hopefully) to acquire Schneider, which will be a far better investment of that pick than any player we could realistically hope to draft -- at least in the short term.

On Namestnikov - I agree. Hadn't thought about it. I would prefer to have a #2 center with a little more power-forward style game as opposed to how Namestnikov plays. I guess Detroit has gotten by with small-ish centerman over the years so I guess we could too. We can't really have too many big power forwards in the system if you ask me. Plus, I think Galchenyuk's ceiling is probably light years above Namestnikov's but his scoring may be partly a result of playing with Yakupov. Time will tell. |

I agree with Tim that in a perfect world SFY wants to keep the first pick and use the second one in a trade for a goalie that can play immediately. Ideally the pick would be a defenseman, but if the best available player is a forward, we can use that too - either down the line or like we did with Ashton, convert it into another player at another position.
What I don't agree is that there is a need to specifically look for Vinny's replacement at this time. Baring injury, he should be manning that position for the next 5 or 6 years. The real question is what he does with the 3 or 4 second round picks. How many of those, if any, go for immediate help will make draft day real interesting.

I see no need for Malcolm on this team. They need a starting goalie, and they don't need another project or a euro that'll disappear overseas if they don't sign him to his wishes. The 2 years you may lose playing in front of a guy like Schneider or Bernier while the team continues to form, will be well worth it when they hit their possible full potential down the road.

I know D is a need this organization has but I'd still be surprised to see our pick be used on one. Granted, I'm still hoping that Dumba, Trouba, or even one of the other ones is picked up. However, we know D can be found in later rounds much easier than pure goal-scorers, and with Yzerman's recent Russian draft and his days back in the early 90s, Gachelnyuk or even Grigorenko are probably just as likely as Murray or Dumba. If we still have DRW's pick, I can see Subban as a possibility.
