The worst part is, no one saw it coming. I was really surprised with the strength of the storms when they rolled through KC last night. I mean, it was February 28th, for crying out loud. Tornadoes are incredibly rare this time of year in this area of the country.

The winter out here has been really mild .. KC is on track to set the lowest snowfall amount for the winter in recorded history.

Just a lot of weird stuff goin' on.

Lives will continue to be lost as long as people continue thinking in terms of patently untrue statement like that one.

I agree. Unfortunately, I don't think that mindset will ever change. Whenever a meteorologist makes a call for dangerous weather and it doesn't pan out, these people are the same that complain about sensationalism and over-hyped reporting, so they just start tuning it all out.

That said, the storm really did come out of nowhere, plus, it was during the night, so no visual aids, which are crucial in spotting tornadoes.

The severe weather from the past 24 hours or so was well forecasted days in advance, and even with the storms that hit overnight, the warnings were timely based on radar data. The sad truth is that people -- who already don't generally take enough initiative for staying aware of the weather -- are even less likely to respond overnight.

The myths of "without warning" and "get paid to be wrong all the time" propagate like wildfire. That the above are seen as common knowledge is a monumental disservice to the ultimate goals of saving lives.

I don't know, I live north of the real bad stuff so I don't know for sure. But, I knew we were going to have severe thunderstorms. However, I never heard a word about ef4 tornadoes being a possibility. Maybe that is because we were far enough north it wasn't, bbut tornadoes that big are unheard of in Feb.
