Default New Rumor - Malone, No.2 to Toronto?

From Fan590.com:

Leafs Rumored In Deal With Lighting

Hockey Night In Canada's Elliotte Friedman was on THE FAN Tuesday morning, revealing that there is a rumor floating around the NHL concerning the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs would trade the seventh overall pick in this summer's draft to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the second overall pick - and more. Click here for the complete interview.

The Leafs would also acquire winger Ryan Malone and possibly another player.

Malone signed a seven year-31.5 million dollar (U.S.) contract with the Lightning last summer. He is paid between 7-8 million in each of the first two years of the contract. The first year of that contract has expired.

BP Note: Before dismissing this as just another rumor, keep in mind that this management group has proven to provide the fire when there's smoke in the media.

Luke Schenn and Kaberle would have to be coming back the other way in the deal.

So, we give up a top-line forward, our #2 pick, and more, for TOR's #7?

Lawton praised Malone last night for his age, work ethic and his big upside yet to come.

More bovine flatulence for the Toronto media. Let's see #2 and Malone for #7. Highway robbery must be legal in Canada.

Seriously, Toronto wants Tavares, Burke has said so publicly. The only way this works for Toronto is the Isles take Hedman or Duchene with the first pick, and right now the Isles are saying nothing about their intentions.

Over on HFBoards there are several threads on this. The predominant school of though is that it would be the #2 for Luke Schenn and the #7. Malone would not figure in this at all.

Now if the Isles cross everyone up and take someone other than Tavares, the Bolts have a decision to make. Do you take Tavares or trade down. But the Bolts hold all the cards here. They can tell Burke to take a flying leap and take Tavares, Duchene or anyone else.

But the Bolts should make no deal, if they make one at all, until the intentions of the Isles is known. Personally, I would stay with Malone rather than having to go out into the free agent market to replace him. That would make two top 6 forwards they would have to come up with.

Just more silliness from the Toronto media who foster the entitlement mentality there.
