Default Tyler Perry Presents: Admiral Madea Runs Your Star Fleet **Semi-Spoiler Alert**

I went to the new Star Trek movie, and I was fairly satisfied. If you're expecting to go see a sci-fi drama like BSG, you're not going to get it. If you're looking to go see an action movie with some Star Trek nostalgia laced in, then you should be happy with it.

The casting was fantastic, especially for Bones and Scotty. Spot on. I wanted to hate the new Kirk, but I couldn't. That's probably because the script was so heavy on action and so light on dialogue he never really had the chance to expose any acting weaknesses.

Tyler Perry is the admiral that runs Star Fleet? I thought Madea was in jail?

The best thing JJ Abrams did with the story is that he broke the timeline with original series Trek and all the series that followed. Those shows/movies are on a completely different temporal railroad track than these JJ Abrams movies. That allows him to ignore canon from here on out and not have to worry about how the sequels they are planning would impact the timeline of the Star Trek we all remember. I think that's a very good thing. He's not tampering with what should never be tampered with while at the same time resurrecting the franchise. I like that. I like that a lot.

I think they've got this new crew under contract for 2 or 3 more movies. Now, if JJ Abrams wants, he can dial back the action and slowly ratchet up the drama. That's what I hope he does. I think the action movie aspects probably have hooked a new generation on Trek. Good. Now it's time to infuse the drama and values of Trek into some real storytelling.

I couldn't get over how much Karl Urban had DeForest Kelly nailed down. The scene in the shuttle where he's freaking out about having to fly in a spaceship and explaining about how he had to join Star Fleet because his ex-wife had taken everything he owned on the planet Earth was just... great.

Thanks for the previews. This might be the first movie since LOTR that I see in the Theatre.

I should also mention that the special effects (aka the space porn) and the sets are outstanding. It was competitive with the first hour of the BSG finale, which as you all know was very visually intense.

Just saw it. I like it, and the next few movies have some good potential. As a trek fan, I hate to admit it, but a lot of the 'canon' was either crap or ignored by the past crop of writers. This essentially wipes the slate clean. Very very good job on Spock's love interest--and will develop Spock's girlfriend character a bit more.

I can't wait for the The Three Stooges.......

It's got all the Lost-isms ... flashbacks, origin stories and of course, time travel to allow the writers to fuck with the plot all they want.

To me (a mild Star Trek fan but a pretty big sci-fi fan), it was just an action flick with heavily reverential tones. There really wasn't a lot to it. It's clearly just a vehicle, but yes, it is a satisfying one. I agree the casting was excellent. Kirk plays up his maverick and philandering sides for some good laughs. Not sure what else can be done with the Spock character that is so fully fleshed out. Uhura is smokin hot. Harold from Harold and Kumar plays a solid Sulu. Scotty got the biggest laugh near the end. But Bones stole the show ... nailed the accent, attitude and everything.

I'll look forward to sequels.

Yeah. I think it's fine to introduce "New Trek." That said, I think Gene Rodenberry was probably spinning in his grave and I hope JJ Abrams now goes back and starts to write subsequent movies with more serious dramatic content that reflects the ideology of what Rodenberry was trying to convey: a positivist vision of the future where human ingenuity, morals (inclusive, tolerant morals), and ideals can overcome any challenge.
