According to TSN

"Gagner has two years left on his current contract and will make $5 million in each season with a cap hit of $4.8 million.

...

Purcell has two years left on his deal and will make $4.5 million in both seasons with an identical cap hit
."

So identical cap hit but Gagner will make more real money.

HUH??

I haven't seen much of Sam Gagner, but I see he's smaller, has generally scored less than Purcell, and actually has a slightly higher cap hit. So unless Yzerman expects Gagner to realize his potential with us, I don't understand this trade at all. I was really hoping the Purcell money could go toward the blue line instead.

I just think there's something else coming, this is just pawns being moved around the board.

Cap hit is determined by the average salary over the duration of the contract. I'm guessing Gagner's salary went up as the contract progresses, while Teddy's went down.

Edit:

OR.. they're saying Purcell's cap hit matches Purcell's salary, not Gagner's cap hit.. Nevermind.

This could be what Yzerman/Cooper are thinking

Ondrej Palat - Steven Stamkos - Tyler Johnson
Alex Killorn - Val Filppula - Ryan Callahan
Jonathan Drouin - Gagner - Nikita Kucherov

Killorn and Callahan on the same line seems a bit redundant, swap Killorn and Palat?

Glad Teddy is moved. Don't know the 3D-Chess SFY is playing(because, who could possibly know?)

Winger for Center, younger if we keep him.

Crazy? Perhaps
Not allowed I don't think... maybe there's a backroom deal that another team will claim him, like BUF who can use him or buy him out and still help get to the cap floor.

Scary - on June 13, Eklund called Gagner to Tampa an E4.

Phoenix and Toronto need centers with big time D in play (Yandle, Phaneuf), Tampa has the other assets in prospect wingers, 1st rounder, but not a center an they wish to include. Now with Gagner might they have the right package?
