The plot thickens.

Gagner, apparently, being put on waivers for the purpose of a buy out

Again, hold tight on the waiver situation, that's not confirmed, so it may not be the case
From a deleted tweet (Stephen Whyno)...

@SWhyno: #TBLightning to buy out Sam Gagner as long as he clears waivers, team said in a tweet that was then deleted. #Oilers

Told at this moment no truth to Gagner buyout. Just a trade for now.

Default Ok

So how does he fit in, and shorter term..less time on his contract?

None of this makes sense at all on the surface. The contracts are nearly identical, and both players have a reputation for being inconsistent and performing below their abilities. I guess a change-of-scenery swap isn't the worst thing in the world, but it does nothing to address the #1 reason we all thought Purcell would be moving -- money and the cap.

I posted this to Erik but if one of you peeps knows..."What would be the advantage of buying out Gagner vs. Purcell?" - If it goes that way...

Headscratcher for sure. Gagner is younger though so may have untapped potential?

This is either a precursor to another deal or SY perhaps has someone to claim him off waivers. Why not buy out Purcell at a lower cap figure is someone was getting bought out.

Wouldn't be a buyout... that'd be regular buyout. Could be an acquire-and-trade situation, or just another deal is on the horizon and Gagner fills a hole that hasn't happened yet....

Be patient... long few days ahead as we head into free agency.

People are saying that because Gagner is under 26, a buyout would only cost us 1/3 of his salary instead of 1/2.

"Would've cost $6 million over 4 years to buy out Purcell, would only cost $3.33 million over 4 years to buy out Gagner."
