Well... I think America did just enough tonight to keep us from being a fascist dictatorship.

That said... Democrats left some money on the table in the House and governor's races and put themselves in a bad spot for the Senate for a while, especially if Sinema can't pull it out in AZ.

In terms of turnout, it was what I thought it would be for months – a heavyweight fight. Both sides did everything they could to get out the vote. Big takeaways for me are that 1. There are still a sad and frightening number of non-engaged citizens (many of whom might have to learn the hard way through personal suffering) and young people who still don’t realize that they have the power to direct this country if they would only realize it; and 2. There are still a sad and frightening number of Trump followers or apologists (I’ve long since stopped caring to decipher the difference). The campaign that creature has waged, the frenzy he has whipped this nation into ... its so clearly wrong, so inexcusable. I hope I see all of his supporters pay a price for this shame, this diseased corruption they called into existence.

The third-party voters with a dagger to the backs of the D's again.

So, about all of those polls showing Gillum leading for a long time, how do they keep messing these up? What are they missing?

The Trump demographic are the rich, white males with no college degree, evangelicals, (who may have a degree and may be female), traditional republicans and deplorables.

In a sampling, it’s hard to get those ratios right.

There are plenty of closet Trump supporters who won't admit it in public or to an exit poll or a pre-Election Day poll. They just make their opinions known in the voting booth or in their living room filling out their mail ballot. Independent voters also lean R when it's time to make a decision. I still think the Kavanaugh hearings hurt the Dems to where their margin yesterday should have been bigger.

What they need to focus on now is what these newly elected representatives ran on - health care and pre existing conditions being covered, tax cuts for the rich etc. Don't come out guns blazing starting more investigations of Trump, or God forbid, articles of impeachment. This just plays into Trump's victimization logic and will die in the Senate anyways. Find a 2020 candidate who will speak to what voters in the heartland care about instead of trying to keep up with Trump's hate tit for tat, and you can win. Find out what affects their pocketbooks and their daily lives and tell them what you will do to help them. The politics of fear will be played out on just one side of the aisle then. You will also need to work with Rs on bi-partisan legislation, or again, you will end up being blamed for gridlocking Congress and the people will turn on you in 2020.

Per CNN's exit polling, just about all demos broke for the Democrats with the exception of old white people. Who make up the largest voting bloc. Typical voting patterns (Florida voted almost identically by county to two years ago), under 30 don't vote in large numbers, old people have the huge turnout.

Old white people are still scared, and there's a ton of boomers. Death rattle gonna rattle.

I happened to be surrounded by Trumpers at the game last night. They were all in their early 40s, blue collar that attend a few games a year.

Listening to what is clearly not a representative sample, but augmenting what I heard last night with others, I'm convinced that it makes no difference whether the democrats nominate a progressive or a moderate.

Trumpers hate "liberals" and "socialists." You and I think of a socialist in the classic sense. They define a socialist as someone who wants to change America. Some examples from last night:

One of the guys behind me said that he was going to vote for Nelson because he hated Scott. But then they handed him the ballot and it was in Spanish. It was 2 sided, with English on one side and Spanish on the other. He took it as the liberals had printed the ballot in Spanish and English was a secondary language (never mind that the republicans run the election office - facts mean nothing). It made him so angry that he voted for Scott. He went on and on about when you call someone you press one for English and two for Spanish. "If these invaders keep coming here it's going to be press one for Spanish and two for English."

Gays were discussed a lot. "I don't mind gays, but they need to stop shoving it down my throat." "I can't even take the kids to Disney World because 2 guys will be kissing."

"Women are taking all the good jobs." "Those college people think they are better than me." "There are all these Muslims mosques and we are going to have to follow Sharia law." On and on all night.

You can't argue with them about facts. Facts are secondary to their fear that the country is changing in ways they don't like. And Trump and the republicans exploit and feed that fear - in return for their tax cuts.

Newt said that the 2 issues that would impact the election were Kavanaugh and the Caravan. Kavanaugh because it would result in fear that white males were going to be falsely accused of sexual harassment and they couldn't protect themselves. We saw Trump (who reportedly talks to Newt every day) exploit that with his white men are in danger speech. The Caravan, because it was more Spanish people coming to America. They know that these people aren't terrorists like Trump said, they are just more Spanish speaking people impacting their lifestyle.

I'm tired, very discouraged and my thoughts aren't well collected. I just don't know how you argue with ignorance.

I will take issue with you Donnie. It is NOT ignorance. It is willful stupidity. These are the irredeemable deplorables.

Esp in the governor's race. Not sure who in heck all those independent candidates were, but their total could've made a difference had most broken for Gillum. Makes me sick.

ANYONE still supporting that fear-mongering idiot at this point is either a fascist or OK with fascism, and I don't care much about the difference either.
