Cameron Gaunce has been recalled.

Bigger story is probably who wasn't.

I'm taking it as "put Schenn and Coburn in to see how we are if both have to play" and they are simply rewarding Gaunce with an NHL game check or two. Helps inform deadline decisions. Of course, if McDonagh is out longer term then maybe you rotate your Masins and Footes up to get a look.

Seems pretty clear at this point that the organization doesn't see a NHL future with Masin. Masin has been the best defender for the Crunch the past couple months IMO and still nothing. Foote hasn't been impressive, but he would have been passable in a 12-15 minute role next to Hedman. At least as passable as Schenn will be.

Since Gaunce probably is the #7 guy, we're looking at this maybe:

Hedman-Schenn
Sergachev-Shattenkirk
Coburn-Cernak

Not the best, but I guess it's better to have injuries prior to the deadline to act accordingly.

My take.

Gaunce is not going to play unless there is an injury in warm ups. He makes less than Foote and doesn’t cost as much on the cap. It’s all about the cap. Remember, this is the team that sent down Stephens and risked losing Schenn over the bye week to add to the cap.

Gaunce is 29, he gets a little extra pay for a game or two, all the delicious hot, buttered popcorn he can eat and an afternoon at the hotel swimming pool. A little financial reward for being an overager in Syracuse.

Hedman / Sergachev
Shattenkirk / Cernak
Coburn / Schenn

Masin and Foote get to keep playing and Syracuse doesn’t lose either of their top 2 defensemen this weekend instead of having one of them sit in the press box in Tampa.

I don’t think you can read anything bad into Masin’s non call up. Actually, it’s good that they aren’t promoting him to sit.

Looks like McDonagh is still in a boot and using a scooter based on some pics from today's charity event. Maybe it's precautionary from swelling, but it still doesn't seem like a day to day thing.

Not fully understanding why you wouldn't take a look at Foote. Schenn and Gaunce are not what you would want in playoffs, unless I'm missing something. Foote needs a look IMO with deadline coming and too many LD on roster.

Why not give him a few games with Heddy and see what the heck he has to offer? I saw the cap reference, so maybe its cap related. Maybe they think they are ok with Macs injury, but this situation could happen again and what would we have to fix it?

If he is playing that poorly that he cant get a look, then that's not a good sign as he was our highest pick for some time

Blah.

So, is someone hurt? Are they trying to showcase him for a trade?

Could Verhaeghe be a trade option as we approach deadline?
