The cup check is a tradition as old as the time when players first strapped them on.

I realize its been years now, but the Devils have NO reason to gripe about a hit.
Freeze it a 1:44 and its a shoulder to the face.

Shane Willis and Paul Kariya also both say hello.

For that matter, how about the time Scott Stevens tried to claim Kubina deliberately shot the puck at his head in '03 to make Pavel get all in his emotions?

Hedmen said he texted the guy after the game and apologized for the "hit"...

The only thing that bothers me about Kuch's hit is that it was Kuch that delivered it. If guys like Kuch and Stammer feel like they need to step up with the big hit that's a problem.

I get your point, but in both of their cases, I don't think they feel that they are the ones that have to be physical. Both 91 and 86 are run at, hacked and whacked at every opportunity. At some point, as a skilled professional hockey player, if you see you can legally run a guy, you just do it. Simple as that. And it makes you and the bench feel damn good.

If they go so far as to forget why they're on the ice (to score points) then it's a problem, otherwise, I think it's a huge boost to team morale. Those big hits really riled-up NJ and affected their game.

Checking isn't just finishing a hit on a player after he's passed the puck off, its also to disrupt the puck carrier into losing possession. We don't necessarily want our best guys finishing checks along the boards, but those open ice checks everyone should be doing so we can do a quick counter. Our 10/11 team did a lot of damage in the playoffs that way.
