Looking at the salary numbers though Orlando outspends Atlanta by about $5million. Granted that difference will be wiped out when Kaka leaves but he's the only player on the squad making over $1million. Next highest paid is Nocerino at $800K which is insane because he's probably our 9th or 10th best player.

That's a league-wide issue though: teams blow a ton of money on one or two aging DP's. Atlanta's plan was to find 3 younger guys in the 22-26 range they could spread their DP money out on. But the only way that works is if you have a coach like Tata who can ID those players and sell them on the idea they can develop in MLS toward a bigger payday under his tutelage.

I'm fully aware, was just hoping since Orlando was good at building such a strong squad on a lower league budget they would be able to do that once they moved up. When the new owner came in and installed his people that kind of went out the window but this past off-season with the new GM and Kreis in charge was a definite upgrade though.

Tonight was a fantastic night for the future of the US Open Cup. Cincinnati beat Chicago on penalties in front of a large and raucous crowd, and Miami stunned Atlanta on a last-second counter attack.

Now they play each other, so there will be a non-MLS team in at least the semifinal.

Miami FC is pretty impressive. They spent a lot of money for an NASL team to get where they are though so I guess it had to pay off eventually. No idea what will happen to them if Beckham gets his team going.

Atlanta was playing their 5th match in the span of something like 12 days and pretty much played all their kids, but yeah, Miami's a very strong club.

Tampa Bay's tepid attendance is a problem for their bid. If you watched the Cincinnati game on ESPN2 last night, they're pretty much already at an MLS level of fan support that you simply don't see at Al Lang.

Cincinnati practically gives away tickets for $5-10. I wouldn't be surprised if they make the same actual gate revenue as the Rowdies as a result. I'm not that impressed by the pure numbers as a result. Also our stadium is only 7000 anyway.

Also it was an event to get an MLS team to come to their place, especially one that's playing so well. It's like when Chelsea or someone gets drawn away to Walsall in the FA Cup.

Would the Rowdies get the draw at that price point too? I'm not so sure. That's my only hesitation about Tampa Bay, if I'm a MLS executive. Tampa's demographics aren't perfect for their product because the population skews older with less disposable income to spend on sporting events.

A big turnout for the USMNT qualifier would be a good thing for the Rowdies, IMO.
