How is #1 draft pick determined? Some sort of lottery like the NBA I gather. How many teams get a ping pong ball (or whatever). In NBA I think all non-playoff teams get a shot.

Each team out of the playoffs gets a ball.

If the Canadiens or Maple Leafs fall into that category, they get 10 balls apiece.

it's weighted, and you can only move up 5 spots, so only the bottom 5 teams get a shot at #1. here's an example from last year: http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Draft-Lottery chicago won, so they moved to 1 & pushed philly to2

some flyers fans are claiming that roy made a throat slashing gesture at the flyers bench, anyone see this?

So, as I understand it, if the Lightning are the worst team they have a 14/105 chance or just 13%. Knowing the team's luck they could end up tenth or worse.

i don't see where you got that percentage.

the teams are in reverse order of finish, and the lottery winning team moves up 5 spots. that's it, no one else moves up or down

edit: should be 4 places, as team #6 can only move up to 2nd place

Looking at the link Sotnos provided, if the Lightning were to have the worst record in the league they would have a 48.2% chance of getting the #1 pick.

If Toronto is in the lottery the Lightning will have 0% chance of getting the #1 pick.

So, if I'm understanding it right, there's only one drawing? If we're last, we have to hope for someone 6th through 14th to win.... or us?

So even hitting rock bottom won't really help us in the draft?

it helps, but it's not guaranteed to give us #1. they did this after the pens deliberately tanked to get lemieux iirc.

it's not 48% though, it's 25% for the worst team

interesting stat from one of the game stories today:
Quote:
It was the 17th time this season Tampa Bay lost when either leading or tied after two periods.
the amount of points they've squadered this season is amazing
